I heard someone talk about these states before but apparently they seem to belong to new age or Buddhism. What exactly is the Churches teaching on these brain waves and the exploration of them during meditative prayer?

There aren’t any. At all.

They also don’t “belong to New Age or Buddhism”. They are standard science. And the Church has nothing at all against the scientific studies of brain waves during meditative prayer.

There are some loopy New Age ideas about brainwaves, but these have nothing to do with the actual science. Just ignore them.

Alpha, beta and theta are waveforms that your brain generates at different times depending on your state of consciousness. So is delta, but this occurs only when deeply unconscious.

It’s not occult or mystical, it’s hard neuroscience. The EEG records it.
