I once heard an Englishman insult his neighbors to the north by saying that, “they still eat their young.”

At the time I laughed and thought it was an incredibly witty way of calling someone crude and vile. That line has stuck in my mind for years, and I thought it was just because I found it humorous, though I don’t think I’ve ever used the line.

Now, I’m beginning to see it as more horrific as I watch the news on stem cell research and begin to think of it as a real possibility.

I keep reading about the potential that embryonic stem cell research has for curing Alzheimers and a host of other ailments.

Let’s pretend that embryonic stem cells DID cure a dozen malady’s. In fact let’s pretend it was so potent, that the cure was as simple as consuming the stem cells in a gel-tab form! Yes, eating our own young.

Would highlighting this grissly scenario get through enough thick skulls?

No. The self-centered, it’s all about me and what I want, need, believe, folk will pay no attention. Anymore than explaining and showing the true meaning of abortion turn most minds from it. 😦

I know many that would be totally unaffected until they met Christ when they die.

Y’know, if “they” can target the youth with their alcohol, tobacco, and sex-ed education, why can’t we? The younger folks seem to have the clearest vision on these matters.

An Englishman speaking about the Scots in this manner is probably referring to Christie Cleek.

abortionists in China do eat their victims. the reason? “to show how modern we(abortionists) are”

Abcdefg, Oh great now I’ve gotta clean the chunks outa my keyboard.

Joseph, I don’t know if Cleek was what this man was referring to. That link doesn’t say anything about Cleek eating his own young. There’s cannabilism, and then there’s eating your own young, which seems an even more vile form of cannabilism.

No that link doesn’t, but like all folktales there are many variants, and stories of Christie Cleek with his big pot hook eating even his own children have been used to frighten naughty children for centuries. “If ye don’t behave, Christie Cleek shall come for thee!”

Christie Cleek is spoken of as using a big pot hook (a cleek) as a weapon or tool with which he would impale his victims and drag them away. I think this story may be ancestral to the modern urban legend of the escaped convict with the prosthetic hook in place of his hand: A young couple are on a date in a car, they hear a bulletin on the radio about an escaped with a hook for a hand believed to be in the area. The girl afraid and asks her boyfriend to take her home. He is annoyed that their date is ending like this, starts the car, pops the clutch and drive off, tires squealing. When they get to her home, he gets out of the car and walks around to he side to open her door, and there in the door handle he sees… a bloody hook!

Goosebumps!

Lovely. Repeatedly invade a nation, ravage the country and the people, and then condemn them for being depraved. How utterly English.

Sounds more American to me.

That’s not called for.

In the first place, the vast majority of the English have not committed the atrocities you mention against the Scots, nor do we have evidence that any significant portion of the English actually think the Scots as a whole to be guilty of this particular depravity.

In the second place, this thread is based on the comments of one particular Englishman, whom we have no evidence of having invaded or ravaged Scotland, nor do we know with certainty that he was in fact referring to Christie Cleek or that if he was, that he was equating all Scots with him. I suggested the possibility because I enjoy discussing folktales and the story of Christie Cleek is one with which I am familiar.

In the third place, we don’t actually know that he was talking about the Scots at all; he may have been talking about his neighbor across the street to the north in Liverpool or London,.

It is one thing to try to interpret one man’s strange comments about his neighbors, it is another to make blanket slams against an entire people.

Ditto about the blanket slams.

Well, we already use aborted kids to make chicken pox vaccines. It’s not all that far of a step.

And about the “blanket slams,” yes, they are not called for. Every nation has committed atrocities, has had atrocities committed on it, and the scores at this point are WAY too high to reckon up. Suppose we leave it at “we’ve all been wronged and we’ve all done wrong,” and go for the “and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us” clause of the Lord’s Prayer? Playing the blame game at this stage is kind of, well, pointless. Sure, the Scots had Christie Cleek. The ENglish had Jack the Ripper. The Americans had BTK (past tense, thank God!). The Germans had Hitler. The Romans had Nero! Every nation or group of people will have its misfits, psychos, and just total evilness. So saying something is “typically English” or “typically American” really doesn’t mean anything. “Typically Earthling” might.

Sorry, didn’t mean to drag out the soapbox there.

But I really don’t think that some people would stop at eating human-embryo-geltabs. :bigyikes:

Some people wouldn’t stop at human-embryo geltabs.

My question is would enough people stop?
