Things are heating up in Eastern Orthodoxy

my personal.take is that the Russian patriarch is maneuvering his pieces to become the defacto head of Orthodoxy… A Russia lead Orthodoxy would be very different to deal with…

Sadly, none of this is to do with religion. It is politics. The Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) supports Putin’s totalitarian regime in Russia and that regime supports the ROC. Russia doesn’t believe in an independent Ukraine. It thinks the Ukraine should be part of Russia. Therefore, the Russians cannot abide autocephaly for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church which they think ought to be under the Moscow Patriarchate.

Unfortunately, I can envisage the ROC getting its way in this matter. It is by far the largest of the Eastern Orthodox churches and I think the majority of the others are Slavic as well. There are few Hellenic churches like the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

There is a far better case for recalling Moscow’s own todos, given the circumstances under which it was granted . . .

DO NOT poke the Russian bear Ukraine and Constantinople! or he will come roaring down from the North country. Russia rules the East and China would probably follow their lead so unless you want WWIII it’s not a smart move.

A good article to begin understanding the seriousness of what the Ecumenical Patriarch did. Making schismatics leaders while suppressing the faithful in a land you have no right to be in is not a small deal and is not okay. All of the Orthodox Churches have spoken negatively about his actions while the Russian and Serbian Churches have elevated the seriousness to stopping communion with him.

War is more or less inevitable.
Western Christians don’t have the mindset to understand the things that are happening over there. Russia, after a hundred years of atheism is really embracing Orthodoxy like never before and building churches and cathedrals on an assembly line scale. Constantinople, which has been on the decline for 500 years knows this and is making one last desperate grasp at a power play. It’s not going to end well for everyone involved.

Since we are guessing I beg to disagree. This is the Church not politics. Politics and what Putin wants equal zero. As far as the Church is considered this conflict is like when you have been feeling like having a flu and one day it starts. After it starts you know if you take care of yourself it is gone in 3-4 days.
Constantinople has been having a personal theology in which all teritories that aren’t directly under the jurisdiction of a direct patriarch of the land (like Ukraine) are by default under Constantinople. The Russians are not the only ones questioning what is this based upon, theologically. Now the flu has started. Pat Bartholomew or his crew literally just supported Philaret no matter what he stands for what he preaches just to get Ukraine under Constantinople. At the same time the Greek Orthodox bishop went to Rome and seeks support for autocephaly because he sees Constantinople comibg to “get 'em all.” Actually not even Philaret has full auticephally his patriarchate has to be subordinate to Constaninople.
Putin will not into war over something like this. Problems in Syria or standing up US in Venezuela is more like it to stir him up, but this drama between bishops will not.
The Church will somehow calm down and figure out a peace under the protection of Her bishop, Jesus Chirst. But He lets them all vent off while all minds will be set in the direction He judges.
I do not worry that He will keep the Church independent this time around from political stirring. Plus Putin wants to end embargos and other things, there is clearly not interest on who dedicates myrrh in Ukraine.
Russia may be buildinh churches but church attendance is not that great from what I heard.

Putin doesn’t run Russia, Kirill does. You obviously haven’t figured that out yet.

I don’t think that is going to happen. (Not going to say they aren’t going to try)
