He brought literacy to England and without him we would not have writing nor the preservation of the folktales of the olden times. Yes I like reading about the old gods in the sagas as well as the dwarves, elves and what not. If it were not for his writing down the tales of old Tolkein would have had a much harder time finding material to write his epics.Congrats! I, too, am curious what drew you to that particular saint.
Oh, also the civilizing aspects of education that Bede brought. Yes he brought Christianity, but he also brought civilization. I’m big on education and I think Bede helped with a lot of that.

Bede is a very awesome and kindly saint. He’s a great patron to have.
Sad story – as a kid, he and another monk (a learned guy who became a bishop later) were the only survivors from the choir of a small monastery that had been struck by the plague. The two of them sang the entire Office for the entire monastery for something like a year. This is said to be part of why St. Bede knew Scripture so well.
