Five years being the maximum time it will take to pay off my student loans. I understand ordinations happen at various ages but practically, is this reasonable? What are some things to do, read, consider, and pray in the meantime?

Well perhaps you could stay with a religious order as a brother while working? Personalet i would recommend Reading the Works of Saint montfort. Anyways when I look at you Americans payment for Education I sure am happy to live in Denmark. Here Education is free and you get Paid 950 dollars a month for Studying. downside is the only theology is lutheran.

Not trying to be argumentative, but what’s your tax rate there? Is it right for people who decided to go into the trades and not to college to have to pay for other people’s college?

“Into Trade”? Do you mean Like a baker? Masons and such? The tax rate is High (depending on income) compared to USA but it also includes free Education, hospitals, eldercare, social Security payments, retirement money etc.

@grt, are you already seeing a spiritual director? If not, that would be high on the list. Talking with the vocations director of your diocese or religious order would be another thing high on the list. They will both have suggestions for developing your spiritual life and preparing yourself.

You can’t just “stay with a religious order as a brother.” Brothers are full members of a religious order, who discern, apply, must be accepted, go through formation, and take vows. It isn’t some kind of hotel…

Well i dont know how you americans treat Your brothers. But I am going to live in a singleroom provided by the jesuits from january untill summer for a relatovely Low rent while waiting to go to seminary. Had I chosen the Company of Mary the rent would be more or less symbolic but the vocational director recommended the jesuits House because Its in the Capital City and he recommended a Jesuit priest as spiritual director.

That is being a boarder, not a brother. Plenty of places rent rooms…

5 yrs is a long time & anything can happen in the meanwhile 🙂 usually it’s said once u feel a call the person should not delay as delaying in such matters never helps… The earlier one joins, one gets to work more for Our Lord… If the student loan is the only thing that is keeping you away from joining then there are organizations that help in paying off student loans for those interested in entering Religious life… Laboure Society is one of them 🙂

Hi,@grt ,delaying,is not good, try to find any one or an organization sponsors ,to pay off the student loan, if this is the reason, keeping you away from joining the seminary, you could also join a Catholic Bible Study at your nearest parish or close to where you stay, and also of the Catechism of the Catholic Church,Church Fathers ,Saints books etc,so you can strengthen your Faith Hope and Charity,God Bless!

Laboure Society will not support anyone until they are accepted into a seminary or religious order. And there are provisions that, should you not profess final vows or get ordained, you would be required to pay them back.

This.

Your bishop may have a slightly different protocol from some other diocese, but many dioceses have an office of vocations. You can call them directly; they may tell you the place to start is with your pastor. Your pastor can also help you figure out how to go through your discernment. You have many good ways to make use of the time other than just paying off student loans.

Alright… I am not sure about the fine details of the working and conditions of the Laboure Society… but suggested their name if incase the OP fits the various criterias…
