Hello everyone, first of all I’d like to say that I’m brazilian and I don’t speak english very well ;p

I have been struggling for a long time with my faith, and I’ve never seen anyone, anywhere complaining about this same problem, so I decided to tell anyone once for all about my problem.

I don’t wanna be arrogant but I think I have a profund understanding about our faith, how we understand about the dogmas, the church, etc.

So the problem is, that I have problems to freely think with my faith, it may sound weird but it happens for a long time with me and I suffer a lot because of it for a long time, it is like when i start thinking opposite arguments it happens a mental block in my mind, and it was like my subconscious don’t want to think this things and where it leads. It is like, my faith is blocking my rationality, i can’t think in high level and I suffer a lot because of it for a long time, I pray a lot to God to help me with this problem, but I suffer every day.It is like, my mind is “afraid” to thinking so i will lose my faith.

I never knew anyone with this problem and I’ve heard a lot that God gave us reason and faith to work together and one cannot bother each other, but I can’t conciliate both at the same time. So that’s it ;p

Hi Devon,

Saint Thomas Aquinas, doctor of the Church, spent his life reconciling faith and reason, and his writings, notably the Summa Theologica
are a monument to that process. So it is not something dangerous. It is a natural and praiseworthy thing.

The Church has come up with a wonderful Catechism *The Catechism of the Catholic Church *(CATECISMO DA IGREJA CATÓLICA), which is a wonderful help in understanding and defending our Catholic faith. I suggest you get a copy or consult it on line in its Portuguese version at

I’ve been reading This is the Faith by Cannon Francis Ripley. It quotes many historical reasons for why Catholics believe and do the things they do. I think it’s wonderful, even for young folks in high school.

It sounds like you understand the teachings but do not quite have the confidence that your faith can endure exercises of reason? What is an example of an opposite argument you have suppressed? Maybe there is something specific toward which you have caution.
