So a few weeks ago, I was using Amazon to buy Saint medals. Some of them had 3rd class Relics on the back (though to be honest, I can’t be sure they’re genuine).

I had doubts about Amazon, so I used the Discount Catholic Store, who I also found out that sold 3rd class Relics on rosaries, Saint medals and prayer cards. Their policy is that whilst the selling of Relics is simony, that only applies to 1st and 2nd class Relics, not 3rd class.

Is the sale of 3rd class Relics ok? I honestly had no idea when I bought them off Amazon.

Thanks for the help.

Every Catholic gift shop out there, including many at churches, shrines etc sells little medals with “Third Class Relics”. If this was a problem, I’m pretty sure the Vatican would have cracked down on it by now.

All the “Third Class Relic” is, is a piece of cloth that someone manufacturing the medals took and touched to the saint’s existing First Class Relic or to his or her tomb. I suspect it’s almost always the tomb, because many tombs of saints and blesseds are publicly accessible and you can even make your own “third class relics” by simply touching your own rosary, medal, little piece of cloth etc to it.

I buy Third Class Relic medals and holy cards all the time. Although I prefer to make my own when possible, it’s more personal.
