I am trying to discern my vocation. I just started thinking about third order discaled Carmelites. I guess the question I have is this. It sounds like they take a vow of poverty. How can I be in the world, working, and supporting myself and taking a vow of poverty at the same time?

Poverty for a third order is not the same as professed religious. You are to live as simply as you can – so no gold statues of you in your image! 😛

Oh ok, lol! I was wondering how that is supposed to work out when you have to pay the rent! lol

I was about to hit the hay when something gently told me to check in on CAF.

We actually don’t vow anything, but make promises to live according to the rule of the Dominican laity. I did have an OCDS friend take his commitment one step further, and he actually did make the CPO vows. He had to write the provincial and ask permission to do so.

Personally, since I am wife and mother, I chose to live the CPO vows to the best of my ability. I have a certain kind of wardrobe that I wear; try to stick to simple foods; and after God, hubby and son are my superiors. And it all works quite splendidly.

if wanting to know about the OCDS, I would suggest asking them directly. Not sure if we have OCDS on these forums, tho I am wanting to say I’ve seen one or two.

Blessings,

This is a very common question among those interested in secular orders. We (OCDS) do make promises (not vows) of poverty, chastity, and obedience, but our practice of them has to be geared toward our lives “in the world.” Poverty, especially, has a lot to do with your attitude toward goods & money. Be prepare to hear the word “detachment” frequently. 🙂

I don’t know where you live, but your province (the regional structure) of the OCDS has a website. You can find a lot more information there about the order to help you as you begin discern a vocation.

evangelical poverty is more seen as a detachment from wealths. But, but … one can easily say oneself detached from wealths while still enjoying the goods one has.
What makes me believe that evangelical poverty is the desire, the just search, of an effective poverty. We want so much get poor that every time we find a way to get rid of something we do it with joy! and if a blow of fate makes us totally poor, we are rather in the joy than in sadness. That’s it the true evangelical poverty.
