Hi everyone,

I hope this hasn’t already been asked & answered - I’ve searched the forums and Googled to no avail.

This morning, I discovered that Saturday of the Third Week of Advent is missing entirely from my 2012 OSV Daily Roman Missal, and also that the other readings for the Third Week of Advent are all off compared to what they are according to the USCCB website. I went to a bookstore today and noticed that the third Saturday was also missing from the St Joseph Missal as well as the Christian Prayer Breviary (which noted that, at least for the Liturgy of the Hours, you’re supposed to treat today like Dec. 17)

Can anyone shed some light on this?

The week of Advent from December 17 to 23 has proper antiphons and readings. Those are the ones you should be using.

In Christian Prayer, you should be using the readings from December 23 for Saturday, starting on p. 134.

For Lauds today you should have uses the psalmody for Saturday of Week III on p. 916, with he proper antiphon indicated there for the 17th to 24th December.

Tonight you will use the Office of the 4th Sunday of Advent on p. 921 (Evening Prayer I) with the readings for Dec. 23d on p. 136, and tomorrow Morning Prayer, the readings for Dec. 24th on p. 137. Tomorrow evening, you will use Office for Christmas, Evening Prayer I.

I can’t speak for the Missal as I don’t have an English Missal but the same applies, it will be a proper Mass for the 23d. Tomorrow it will be the Mass for the 4th Sunday of Advent.

Hope this helps! Advent/Christmas is a pretty complicated time for the liturgy (it’s worse if, like me, you sing the Office).

This makes a lot of sense! I really wish I would have flipped forward a few pages in the Missal and I might have realized that before posting the question, haha.

I don’t currently pray the Liturgy of the Hours but it’s something I’m looking into starting - the structure is pretty intimidating at first glance, so I’m probably going to wait until I have more time to devote to learning how.

Thank you so much for the detailed explanation and then expanding on how the Breviary works as well. I really appreciate it!

The dates December 17-23 supersede weekdays, there is no Saturday entry because the Third Saturday of Advent always falls within this period. Likewise (at least in the breviary), December 24th supersedes even Sunday.
