So…Later this month, I was meant to start my RCIA, all I had to wait for a phone call from my local parish.

However, the last few weeks have been rather turbulent, with me suddenly being told I had 2 months to find a new place. My prayer’s have been heard and I will be moving in to a new parish in two weeks time.

Wanting to start my RCIA as soon as I arrive in the parish, I emailed two churches. One of them has been very good with it, stating they have already started but they want to call me…which I have emailed back.

The other, however, and this is the one that has got me thinking. Has also already started RCIA, but said I should wait one more year to begin my journey. I emailed a reply, saying that my University’s priest said I would be entering the program at the right time and that was 2 weeks ago. So I got a reply from the Parish priest requesting my Uni priest’s contact details, to discuss with him if I should start now or not.

Does that sound right? It doesn’t to me.

What does RCIA stand for? We don’t have anything liike that in India.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. Thiough the lettres refer to the liturgical rites, they are used loosely to mean the program of catechesis for people intesrested in becomiong Catholics.

Yes Ashurie the second reply from the second parish sounds right. If you have already been receiving some sort of instruction from the Uni priest, they need to know how far advanced you are.

Their first reply was a bit bruqsue and rude. Some parishes’ RCIA team leaders have the idea that once their yearly program has started if you miss out you have to wait a year. to start the next “yearly intake” That is not the Church’s rule and is not what the Church recommends. Though the Church encourages study and liturgies over several months leading to baprism at the Easter Vigil, every candidate is different, some may be received into the Church after only a few weeks instruction and participation but others may take two years if they or their parish priests don;t feel they are ready after one year.

You should be able to enter the RCIA process any time during the year. Whether or not you will be initiated this Easter remains to be seen, but no one should be told to wait until next year.

yes that is what I would do, find out from the priest who knows you, who you have been working ;with to see what he knows about your status, your needs, where you are in the journey ;etc. I would not expect you to start over from square one.

At the parish where I went through RCIA they would allow you to join the class at this time, but it would be Easter Vigil 2012, not 2011, when you would be received into the church. They run almost a year round RCIA, I say almost year round because they take the month of July off, those that will be brought into the church for the next Easter must start either before the July break, or during August. They do occasionally make exceptions if the person is already well versed in the bible and Catholic teachings, but this is very rare.

This however will vary by parish. and

SOUNDS both reasonable and Prudent. He’s not saying 'NO" but let me find out more about whre your at spiritually.

having taught RCIA for 3 years I know that this decision lies with the Pastor of the parish.

In the eary Church, instructions oftten was a matter of years. Now that it has shortend to a matter of months, missing a class means missing infomation you ought to have in order to make the informed decission you’ll be asked to later make.

TRUST in God to guide you to where HE WANTS you to be on HIS TIMETABLE. PRAY alot!

May God continue to guide and lead you HOME!

UPDATE:

I received a email today, with good news too! The Father of my new parish, contacted with my Chaplain at University, and I have been invited to start RCIA asap!
