Music plays a huge part in our experience at Mass. No, it won’t change the sacramental grace that is freely given to us, but it does help us to receive and savor that grace.

Excellent video. Even as a Protestant I was turned off by ‘contemporary worship’. I visited one church once which I thought looked like a great church. However, when I arrived I found they had a worship band. I never went back. I later found a church with similar beliefs but which had a traditional service (usually an organ in the mornings).

Contemporary “praise and worship” music has no place in a Catholic church. The Mass is the same sacrifice as Calvary. Do you think it would be appropriate for St John and the Blessed Mother to be singing happy-clappy songs while watching Our Lord suffer on the Cross? Of course not. Pop music is party music - definitely not suitable for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

There is slightly more justification for Protestants having “praise and worship” music as they have redefined what a church service is. It’s about praising God and hearing His Word preached. They have eliminated the sacrificial aspect of worship, so that sort of music can be used to praise God in that context.
