NBC considers new show featuring a completely dysfunctional family a positive portrayal of Christ and Christians

Dear Joan,

On January 6, NBC will begin a new series entitled The Book of Daniel.

While the public has not seen the program, NBC is promoting “The Book of Daniel” as a serious drama about Christian people and the Christian faith. The main character is Daniel Webster, a drug-addicted Episcopal priest whose wife depends heavily on her mid-day martinis.

Webster regularly sees and talks with a very unconventional white-robed, bearded Jesus. The Webster family is rounded out by a 23-year-old homosexual Republican son, a 16-year-old daughter who is a drug dealer, and a 16-year-old adopted son who is having sex with the bishop’s daughter. At the office, his lesbian secretary is sleeping with his sister-in-law.

NBC and the mainstream media call it “edgy,” “challenging” and “courageous.” The series is written by Jack Kenny, a practicing homosexual who describes himself as being “in Catholic recovery,” and is interested in Buddhist teachings about reincarnation and isn’t sure exactly how he defines God and/or Jesus. “I don’t necessarily know that all the myth surrounding him (Jesus) is true,” he said.

NBC considers The Book of Daniel a positive portrayal of Christ and Christians.

Please take action now! Here is what you can do:
  1. Call your local NBC affiliate and ask them not to air the program. You can find their contact information in your local phone book or by Clicking Here.
  2. Print out a copy of AFA’s pass along sheet, fill in the affiliate call letters and phone number, make copies and pass out at your church. Ask your pastor to announcement it and put information in the bulletin and newsletter. [doc version] [pdf version]
  3. If you haven’t already done so, send an email to NBC by Clicking Here.
EXTREMELY IMPORTANT! Please help get the word out by forwarding this to your family and friends. They probably aren’t aware of it!

Finally, if you believe we are making a difference, would you consider a small financial gift to AFA? There is so much more we could do if funds were available. Click here to help.

Sincerely,

Don

Sheeesh! And I thought Married With Children was bad.
At least it’s not about Catholics. Small comfort though.

If you find the program offensive (and it sounds like we should!), then take note of what companies advertise around the program, and refuse to do business with them. Moreover, let them know that you have decided to boycott them because of their disregard for common decency.

I do not recommend sending money to Don Wildmon. He’s not focused on the evils of Catholicism…at least not right now…but that’s the tradition he comes from.

That sounds almost mainstream for the Episcopal church, which means it isn’t fit for anyone concerned with orthodoxy.

Ick! I didn’t even have the stomach to read the original post all the way through after I started reading the description for this abomination of a tv show. Thank you for alerting me.

Mark:

I see you beat me to it - If it were Bishop Robinson, the Homosexual Republican son would be having sex with the Bishop!

Problem is, that it’s not all that distorted a look at today’s ECUSA.

Write NBC, because this garbage insults both our Lord and His people, but at the same time, say a prayer that God brings the people who are running ECUSA to repentence and renewal. You might want to also say one for all of Anglicanism. Even the “Continuum” is split and splintered into so many pieces that even the best attempts at reconciliation only result in more schism.

Thank you.

In Christ, Michael

I saw the previews of this show on TV earlier this week - scenes of inappropriate behavior, and at the end of the preview, the cast standing for a shot, and they looked all smug.

I agree - it’s not a fair protrayal of true Christians. (But maybe that wasn’t the intent of the screen-writer…)

When I saw the previews, I thought it was a comedy. Along the lines of Desperate Housewives.

Makes sense. NBC just considers adultery, drug abuse, sexual perversion and hallucinations positive things. Much better than the “homophobia” “repression” and “intolerence” of some Christians, right?

I am seriously considering doing away with my Satellite alltogether and just purchasing the only good movies or series on DVD. I would miss EWTN, and some of the educational channels, but I bet my whole family would read alot more.

This makes me sick. What a lack of responsibility. I’m shocked that it’s not a Catholic family. It puts all Christianity in a bad light, and sends the wrong messages about Christians to those who may not know any better. Hopefully it will bellyflop, but just in case I will do what I can to join you in the complaints.
