I’m a fairly new Coordinator of Religious Ed in a parish. Our Religious Ed registration forms have boxes for parents to check which sacraments they have received. If they are missing any, I contact them and offer RCIA. A few are considering it.

One parent has a prior commitment on RCIA nights for about the first month of the program. Our pastor immediately said he would be glad to work 1 on 1 until this person can attend regular meetings.

I was so pleased. This is what priests should be doing. God Bless our pastor!!

congratulations for asking the question in the first place
the parents are our biggest group that is a captive audience for invitations to evangelization and catechesis of all kinds and so often they are asked to a couple of obligatory parent meetings about what to wear for first communion, and the chance is lost to heal marriages and bring entire families back into the full sacramental life of the Church.

not every priest would agree to tutor rcia candidates one on one. you are blessed to have one who will accomodate this person.

Praise God he has time to do this; as priests are the most overscheduled people in N.A., and probably worse elsewhere.

It’s good that you’re asking the parents questions about their reception of the sacraments. We need to do all we can to help people this way. I work with adults who haven’t been confirmed and over time the questions we ask about marriage have increased. In every class there are people who were married outside the Church or have remarried after a divorce. Being able to catch them and help them regularize their marriages has been a good thing.

I think most priests would agree with you. But when they are busting their butts 19 hours a day it is pretty darn hard for them to make regular time for such things. I think we generally misconstrue and under estimate the hard work of the diocesan priest, it ain’t easy.
