Has anyone ever heard of this Monastery? Weston Priory of Vermont? I love Vermont and am there all summer so I was looking around for religious communities there. Are these guys in union w/ Rome? They seem VERY liberal.

They are liberal. And their musical contributions have been a liturgical DISASTER!

thanks, I’ll cross them off my tourist destination list for when I’m up there!

The only North American Carthusian Charterhouse, the Charterhouse of the Transfiguration, is located in Vermont.
Here’s the website for the international order, Carthusian

Can you tell me what you mean by liberal?
in regards to their music, all i can say is that i saw a segment on changing the words on earlier songs in order to make them more inclusive. From what i saw on the website, they looked like they were a little more lax than some other Benedictine monasteries that i’ve seen. i guess you don’t know until you visit them though, or talk to someone who has.

no habits, pictures of their Mass was a group of monks and lay gathered in a circle w/ one guy playing a guitar, and their dedication to “peace and ecumenicism” I mean peace is good, but read it…

I see what you mean. The word Liberal can mean any of things depending on the context in which it is used. When I was Pentecostal I was called liberal because I watched movies, listened to rock music and had an occasional drink.

Please keep in mind that unlike Benedictine and Cistercian/Trappist Monasteries, Carthusian Charterhouses do not include any provisions for retreats or visitors other than immediate family of the monks. As a general rule, I would never visit one unless I was either A. considering a vocation. B. Had business to perform there.

i thought the OP was looking for religious orders there. Here’s what the Carthusians have to say on…
Entering the Monastery
He who wished to join a Carthusian monastery must, above all, grow his desire in prayer. Such a decision does not happen out of whim. He must then contact a monastery, explaining in as great as detail as possible, the attraction to the Carthusian life. In return, he will be asked certain pieces of complementary information regarding his studies, family, etc…
If it seems appropriate, we will offer him a retreat at the monastery in order for him to experience the life. In no other case are retreatants accepted to the monastery. If, at the end of the retreat, the results were positive, we will ask him to wait and delay his entrance a little longer before letting him in, or we might let him enter as soon as he feels ready.

Thanks, but the Carthusians are not what I’m looking for, although I deeply admire all those strong enough to hear that call.

I agree, though he has since indicated that he does not feel called to the Carthusians. As much as anything though, I posted it for others that might be reading this thread. A lot of Benedictine, and even Trappist Monasteries can be visited without advance notice (i.e. they have public chapels or services) but the same is not true of the Carthusians and thus showing up at a Charterhouse does little but disturb their solitude.
