His Excellency Fulton Sheen was incredible at quoting Scripture. However, he sometimes did so in ways that defy the backing up with citations.

For instance, he said the following in his 1973 talks on St. Therese:

"Here, for example, are some excerpts from her writings. First of all about the sword:

‘Oh, my Beloved, I understand to what combats You have destined me. It is not on the battlefield I shall fight. I am a prisoner of Your Love. Freely have I riveted the chain which unites me to You and separates me forever from the world. My sword is love and “I shall chase the stranger from the Kingdom. I shall make You to be proclaimed King” in the souls of men.’

“Those last words of hers were the words of Joshua when he went into the Promised Land.”

Where? I do not find this. Where do I find it?

The archbishop also said, “In the Old Testament, in the Book of Jeremiah, God said, ‘Give Me no rest. Plead with Me night and day!’”

I’ve looked high and low for this quote and found nothing remotely like it. Do you know where I might find it?

Archbishop Sheen was not giving a literal quote, but paraphrasing - stating the meaning of the text in everyday language. The words of St. Therese that he compared to Joshua are very likely a reference to Joshua 24:15.

*[15] And if you be unwilling to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD." *

These are the words of Joshua to the Israelites just before they crossed over into the Promised Land. He is calling on them to choose in their hearts to serve the LORD (to make God supreme/king).

Regarding Jeremiah, I don’t know what passage he is referring to. The passage that came to my mind came from Isaiah (Is 43:26) and not Jeremiah. We are away from home right now and I don’t have my good Bible (with all the cross references) with me. Perhaps someone else can help locate the Jeremiah verse.

This could be the verse. (Jeremiah wrote Lamentations.)

Lamentations 2:18 Their heart cried to the Lord upon the walls of the daughter of Sion: Let tears run down like a torrent day and night: give thyself no rest, and let not the apple of thy eye cease.

I see the sword of Paradise as being changed in Christ’s Time.

The sword that guards the Tree of Life or LIfe’s Tree as a guardrail on the highway; it keeps cars on the road. The sword which guards Life’s Tree keeps souls on the Road/Torah/Way headed towards it, that is, headed to Life’s Tree.

The stranger is the old self. Now we are new creations. Our new hearts and new wine is what saves us. Old self or stranger will be driven away–He must increase and I must decrease. It is when I am weak (old self) that I am strong, the new self.

Side note: we are now children of God. The best St. John the Baptist could have been is a friend. We can now call God Our Father!!! Do not be afraid, you will be loving, kind and merciful. We will have all the virtues. His love will DRIVE out all the old ways or old self.

The first reference may be:

Josh 24:12 And I sent the hornet before you, which drove them out before you, the two kings of the Amorites; it was not by your sword or by your bow.

And the second reference may be:

Jer.50:34 Their Redeemer is strong; the LORD of hosts is his name. He will surely plead their cause, that he may give rest to the earth, but unrest to the inhabitants of Babylon.

That’s as close as I could come, anyway.
