The last issue of This Rock magazine was devoted to book reviews, with the possibility of this practice being repeated once a year every year.

Is this a good idea?

With different reviewers? Is Jimmy going to recommend reading the Bible and Catechism every year? 🙂

I admit I only glance thorugh the usual review section and was initially disappointed to see an entire issue dedicated to the column. But I did enjoy seeing the recommendations from various authors with many unfamiliar titles.

I plan on reading the issue though!

I love the book reviews, and I’m sure I’d love the books, but my problem with devoting an entire issue to it is more of a practical consideration. My budget for apologetics materials is very limited. I cannot afford to buy the books in the normal review section, much less all the ones in this latest issue. I subscribe to This Rock because it packs so much information into every issue, so when there’s an issue with no real information, just directions to other sources, I feel kind of cheated.

Read the books and you will not be cheated! 😉 Sometimes you need a source other than a Magazine. I think that was their idea anyway. Apologetics materials don’t get near enough coverage in small articles.

OK! I confess! I liked the review because they reviewed my buddies in the Writers world! 😃

I wish I could read every book in the magazine! But I can’t afford them right now.

Same here! 😦 But at least it gives me a list which, I can refer to when I have a buck or two, to buy one.
 
The nice thing about well-written book reviews is that they provide information not only about particular books, but about whole subject areas of which you might not otherwise have been aware. In reading the reviews, you really do pick up more than just information about books.
