Those bragging Christmas letters

I love getting the newsletters. Several of our children are adopted from overseas and the families that we met on our trips we only keep in touch via Christmas cards. I love getting them and seeing how everyone is doing - and the pictures of the kids too. I have tons of cousins too and it is the same way. I HATE getting just a signature at the bottom. I WANT to know what is going on in their lives and see pictures of their kids. I think we people who love the letters have been quiet for too long 😃 I don’t want people to stop because they read all the negativity. Keep those newsletters coming - at least for me!

How do you feel when you receive one of those letters in a Christmas card, bragging about the sender’s family’s achievements in the past year? I don’t mean news from family members or close friends, but from people we hardly know.
I’m grateful when we can get through another year without a visit to the emergency room, and they’re gushing about their exotic vacations and how their kids are off somewhere, bringing water to some drought-stricken village, or mountain climbing, etc.
I’m not too fond of them but have never sent one myself. I think I need to learn how. We usually get a very surprising one every year. This year, a nephew who we haven’t seen in 10 years never got a card from him, sends one and invites us to his upcoming wedding which will take place in 2 years. Ah I was very much thinking out of sight out of mind. I think his girlfriend made him do this, Now I have to find a calendar for that year, or write a note and make sure I transfer the info so we may plan for the travel or whatever happens. No one talks on the phone anymore, they expect us to tell each other info for the family but by the time it gets to us it not correct or long past.

I really don’t think we are a minority 🤷 and I’d LOVE to see your old home movies, I’ll bet they are a riot. 😃 BTW, is there an update to THE RING story? I’ll have to go hunt up that thread now 😛
Well Jenny if ya really want I can send ya DVD, as I spent the summer of 2006 transfering old 8mms to DVD. But you gotta promise you wont tell the folks in Minnesoooota (ain’t that the way Bobby Ventura said it?) who we are. LOL.

They’re usually fake or, at a minimum embellished. Make up your own. Last year your 3 year old was the first toddler in space. He HAD to go because his older sister needed dark side of the moon dust. It was the last ingredient she needed for her now patented cure for cancer, yeah that’s it.
:rotfl:

Well, coming from someone who didn’t manage to get out ANY chrismas cards this year…:o :o 🤷 and no kid pictures for 2 years…

I like getting them, especially from a sil in Oregon and a bil in Germany. We don’t get together often, so it’s a nice update, they’ve been sending them as long as I can remember; I collect them.

This year, however, they both put me in tears when I heard how well my kids’ cousins were doing in college, and other their other positive activities and accomplishments…

I got a lecture from DH about not comparing our kids to others, :o and Im OK with it, but I’d still prefer to hear from these distant family members every year.

The older I get, the more I appreciate a card that reads:

“Same old, same old. We are all fine. Have a Merry Christmas.”

"Junior was allowed out on probation from his last opportunity at Statesville. However, turning around and executing a liquor store robbery on his second day out was just too much for his probation officer. What a scamp that Junior is! He’s back at Statesville, in the License Plate division. This time, he was placed in a cell with only one other inmate. Promotion!

"Mimsie was named National Exotic Dancer of the Year by the Exotic Dancers Union. This is particularly marvelous, given her stretch marks from the last grandchild.

“Well, that wraps up what’s been going on in the past year. If you really want to know what goes on in our home, pick up a phone and call us. If you’ve lost our phone number, it’s ###-###-####. Perhaps you could even stop by next time you’re in town.”
I bet you don’t get a lot of surprise houseguests!!!

😃 I don’t let many people call me Jenny, but you could probably get away with it 😛 We lost most of our old 8 mm in a fire when I was little 😦 so be grateful you have those memories–I have a tape of what survived around here somewhere. I’d love to see you and your family in action 😉 —these Minnesooooota winters get long and boring. (I’m also grateful Mr Ventura isn’t Gov’nor anymore! yikes )

Surprise! I like other people’s vacation pictures and home movies, too!

😉 Not if they sent me a bragging letter…😃 I only send them to braggarts, not to everybody else. And those that know me know I wouldn’t harness kid energy to the point of getting foster kids as domestic labor. 😉 On the other hand, there’s those older adult kids of mine…

Oh, we get one (just one) of those braggy letters every year, from the same relative. One year I wrote what I thought was an obvious parody-- of the genre, not of hers in particular!-- and sent it to close family… NOT to her. However, one SIL showed it to the braggy relative, who LOVED it. So, go figure…
