Those little crosses in the Missal

For years now I’ve been wondering about the little crosses which appear in the missal - are the intended to indicate that you should sign yourself at that point?

If you are referring to the 1962 Missal, the crosses are in red. The priest makes the sign of the cross wherever you see the cross in the Missal.

He either signs himself or makes the sign of the cross over something.
