Looking at Canon Law, it seems as if that “Cann. 578-597 and 606 apply to societies of apostolic life, with due regard, however, for the nature of each society”.

There’s also a few Canons that talk about Authority. Namely;

§2 They are also subject to the diocesan Bishop in matters concerning public worship, the care of souls and other works of the apostolate, with due regard to cann. 679-683.

§3 The relationship between a member who is incardinated in a diocese and his proper Bishop is to be defined in the constitutions or in particular agreements.

Can you provide some documentation about canonical erection?

Yes. But if they have their own place then the line between public & private mass is pretty wishy-washy.

True, although I think you meant “unless” not “if.”

It’s hard to see but a multi-million chapel built by Mel Gibson, for example, can be a setting for many “private” masses.

Which is what happened. The bishop erred in what he could do and what he couldn’t do. Bit still, charity says you don’t send the bishop hate-filled emails and then demand he give you your own parish.

Exactly. Simple common sense should tell you to be polite and gracious to the bishop since he is in authority. Whatever canon law says, that much should be clear to the priests and they should counsel the laity. Even though common sense should apply to the laity as well.
