Hello
I had a consultation with a counselor that told me she uses the following techniques. Energy Psychology, Thought Field Therapy, Emotional Freedom Technique. I did some research on them and didn’t find anythign specific about Catholic teaching on these techniques. When she said they had Chinese roots, it made me leary about being in the Eastern religion types that our Religion specifically forbids. I also am leary about anything too trendy since many new wave spirituality techniques aren’t in line with church teaching or the bible for that matter.

Does anyone know anything about specific church teaching on these techniques.

Thanks for advice
Katherine

They all sound like New Age rubbish that should be avoided like the plague but then that’s just my opinion.

Therapies that refer to ‘energies’ or ‘thought fields’ are often inadvisable for Catholics or other Christians to become involved with as they are based on New Age concepts and philosophies that are very definately not Christian. The Vatican has an excellent paper on the New Age. The whole paper can be found here:

vatican.va/roman_curia/pontifical_councils/interelg/documents/rc_pc_interelg_doc_20030203_new-age_en.html

It may be possible to look for a Christian counsellor or even a Catholic counsellor. You should also be able to express your concerns to the counsellor and explain what you are happy with and what you will not get involved with. A good counsellor will respect your faith and your boundaries.
