I really dislike Southpark. I have never watched a full episode, but have seen it while flippng the channels. Unforuntately, it’s a pretty popular show, and people are often chatting about it at work. There was supposedly an episode where the ‘kids’ were saying how *The Passion *‘sucked,’ and how they wanted their money back…and then there was another episode I heard about where Jesus was beating up Santa? What gives with this type of mockery?😦

I’m not a prude…and I can take jokes with the best of them, but if Southpark is looking for fodder for jokes, why don’t they make fun of their families? Their parents? Hmm…no, that would be baaaaddd…well, making fun of Christ should not be permitted on the major networks.

Anyone else feel what I’m saying here?

I used to watch with show, but has become too blasphemous in the last few years  There are several problematic episodes:
  • The Pilot was a fight over Christmas between Jesus and Santa.
  • A Christmas episode had the Iraqis shoot Santa out of the sky and torture him. Jesus guns down Iraqi soliders to rescue Santa before being killed himself.
  • All the priests are pedophiles because they cant have sex with women. Father Maxi (the South Park priest) has to find the “Holy Document of Vatican Law” so he can change it to allow priests to marry. The Pope and the Cardinals invoke the “Great Queen Spider” to decide.
  • The children are scared of hell and spend their days in confession until they find Father Maxi having sex with a woman in the confessional, so they form a fundamentalist church which they use to get money from fake miracle healings. Jesus tells them to go back to school. This episode also depicts Satan in a gay relationship with Saddam Hussien; God is also depicted as a rat-like creature and says he’s a Buddhist. Only Mormons get into heaven.
  • Another episode has a statue of the Blessed Virgin bleeding from her rear. Pope Benedict comes to inspect the statue and gets sprayed in the face with the blood. He then declares that the statue is just menstruating.
These are just to name a few.

I think those types of cartoons are just awful! If that makes me a prude so be it. I used to watch South Park a long time ago but their jokes started going too far.

I find it interesting and infuriating that people can make fun of Christians and Christianity, but they can’t make fun of Moslems, Hindus, Buddhists, etc. It is quite sad. Does anyone remember when that Dutchman printed a cartoon of Mohammed? If you do then you probably remember the Islamic World’s reaction. We should be just as passionate when our faith is spat on. We can leave out the violence part though. It was not like they were being shot at. Hollywood and other movie companies no longer fear Christians. If I remember correctly about 50 or 60 years ago Catholic bishops all around America threatened to botcott Hollywood (about 60 million Caholics or so). Hollywood cleaned up its act then. They formed a movie rating system which is the father of today’s movie rating system. We need to stand up to such wrongness. God speed.

I used to watch South Park all the time and agree that they shouldn’t mock Jesus and Christianity in general, but they make fun of everything - and that includes other religions. I know for certain that they have made fun of Muslims (a couple of times - probably more that I’ve not seen) and would be very surprised if they hadn’t made at least one episode to do with Buddhism.

So it’s not just Christianity and Christians they make a mockery of. I doubt the South Park movie would be five minutes long if they took out all the parts making fun of Saddam Hussein.

I can understand people not liking South Park, though - a lot of the content in it is undeniably horrible.

I don’t watch South Park anymore, because of the content. This is not entertainment, it is just plain TRASH.

What I think is really sad is that people who consider themselves Christian actually watch that show. Aren’t people willing to take a stand anymore for their God?

We supposedly live in a predominantly Christian country. If that were really true, South Park would never have high enough ratings to still exist today.

I consider myself a strong Catholic, and love the show. When it gets personally offensive, I turn the channel. They make fun of everyone and everything.

I stopped watching South Park when I realized I was being a hypocrit. I laughed at the Scientology and Mormon episodes, yet was offended by the Catholic episode. That was a big wake up call–why is it OK to make fun of someone else’s religion and not my own? So, I stopped.

Thanks for sharing that aurora…that’s awesome to self reflect like that…(of course through the enlightenment of God) and change our behavior over it! Commendable, indeed. I never watched this show…I never know when it’s on, but my husband used to watch it, and I was like…why are you watching something that makes fun of YOU AND GOD?

I think that really hit home, and he stopped watching it, although, my son (who is 13) wants to watch it, but he knows that it’s wrong, and doesn’t ask to watch it, anymore.

These shows are stupid, callous, and thoughtless. Like most of the popular media.😛

How do you know they don’t make fun of their families?

In general, I don’t mind if someone spoofs things I beleive in. If I get up in arms about it, I have to refrain from making fun of things important to them; and I’m not willing to make that concession.😃

Also, Family Guy > South park.

They make fun of everyone and everything.
Bingo. The demands of their audience is that they create satire. I can safely say that Jesus beating up Santa isn’t half as offensive as a lot of statements I have seen here about non-Catholic religions. And anyway, that seems to me more a societal jab than a religious one.

Actually, plenty of people do all that.

Indeed - I think the Christian ridicule is almost aimed more at the “secular” Christians in society, rather than aimed at Christianity itself. Think back to the episode where Jesus and Satan are going to fight, and people are betting on the outcome. Jesus wins, and only one bettor had wagered that he would win - Satan. Speaks volumes…

The problem with this type of entertainment is that it lends itself to habituation not unlike drug use or sexual addiction. When one engages in any of these things they get a certain effect. Problem is, thay need to do more and push the envelope in order to experience the same kick. So things get worse and worse. For things to remain funny they have to get gradually more shocking.

If my grandmother was alive today she would have a heart attack watching even network TV. But we now think this swill is normal. We are simply becoming desensitized and sliding into entertainment debauchery. It is like the boiling frog analogy. If you place a frog into boiling water it will jump out. If you put it into cold water and gradually turn up the heat you can boil the frog. We just do not realize what we are doing to ourselves and the slide will continue until perhaps there is a major disaster or economic disruption that gets people refocused on spiritual things.

American entertainment has lost it’s soul. it’s forgotten the reason it exsists. to ENTERTAIN.
To quote a director “If i want a message i’ll go to Western Union”

I HATE and completely loathe when cartoons and entertainment venues try to preach to me. thats not their job. focus, southpark people, and ENTERTAIN me. don’t send me messages.

nothing will get me to turn off my TV faster.

For those of you who are upset about cartoons or any show in general trying to “preach”, I can respect that I do not agree, but I understand your point. However, I do hope that you are just as offended when the preaching happens to be something you agree with.

That’s not correct at all. The job of entertainment is nothing but the intention of the creator. Art is not beholden to the every petulant whim of the masses. If I want to satirize, I will. If I have a point to make, I’ll make it. You cannot say it exists solely to entertain you. That’s denying the right to people who want more out of it.
