Hello to all. I was wondering what everyone’s thoughts were concerning the CBS television show, “Evil”. The premise of the show is to decide whether seriously troubled individual’s cases are either caused by evil possession, psychiatric problems or something in the person’s environment.

Is this a series based on actual documentation or a drama series,?I’m not familiar with it

I watched the first two episodes, then gave up when the suppose Seminarian took drugs to get his apparition.

From the ads I’ve seen, it only gets worse when it comes to actual Church teaching on demonic possession and exorcisms.

Here is a good explanation of the show:

Intense Evil takes faith and the supernatural seriously – Catholic World Report

In the last episode, the woman who was going through the exorcism had the demon speaking through her to Seminarian David that the visions he sees are not from God, but from Satan…
I like the show and seeing all the different ways Satan is working all around us. This show is scary because as a Catholic, I DO believe that Satan is real and trying to take as many of us with him as he can. I like how this show makes you think.
(You might get a better response if this was in popular media)

Yeah, that seems a little weird. And why is it a seminarian that’s doing exorcisms and stuff?? Or is he just investigating possible possessions?

I do admit though, the premise of the show is interesting.

I like the position that the show takes, that very carefully preserves the ambiguity of demonic possession and does not rule out the sheer evil that can be committed by man alone.

David (the seminarian) is only investigating the cases and at times assisting in exorcisms. He works in conjunction with an exorcist and under supervision of a Monsignor.

If the background music were toned down or eliminated, I would be able to understand what is being said. I find the music playing in the background to blank out the dialogue. That happens in many of the TV shows. It competes with what is going on and I see no sense to it.

From what I saw, he didn’t perform exorcisms, but investigated them

Still, why would the Church employ a seminarian who’s on drugs for this ?

As others have said, Seminarian David isn’t a priest- exorcist. Rather, he is the church/Catholic part of an investigating team.
Since we are all flawed creatures, Satan will tempt us with our weaknesses. One of David’s weaknesses is that he wants to be near God, to have visions of Him, to be holy. He falsely thinks that when he hallucinates, that the light he sees and feeling is God. But is it God that he is seeing, or is it really Satan tricking David to want him to keep taking the drugs?
This show reminds me that our priests are regular human beings who are tempted and have to fight Satan daily, and that they REALLY need our prayers.

I like it. I do not watch shows for any deep religious or any kind of meaning. I watch tv shows simply for entertainment.

I misread that as “CBS is evil” at first glance.
Well, CBS is kinda evil so my misreading wasn’t completely inaccurate.

Agreed. But what the heck. I am more interested in the Leland character. What is he supposed to be? I like the Muslim debunker guy. I am as skeptical as anyone. I think we let our superstition go too far. Not that there aren’t demons and possessions. But we give them too much credit.

My wife and I love the show. The first couple of episodes, I was expecting the typical Hollywood response of making the Catholic Church look like a bunch of mean spirited, unintelligent bores who ignore today’s so called “problems”. In fact the lady who is part of the team and is to be objective in each case, usually spouts the anti-Church position but it doesn’t end on that note. Usually the seminarian or someone else in the Church comes back with a thought provoking response that makes the viewer choose what they believe. We’re not versed in the way the Church handles exorcisms so we can’t pick those apart but the show gives pretty good responses about evil in our society. The show seems to at least try to be partial to both sides of every story. Of course, every show my wife and I like usually gets cancelled after the second season. I give the show a 4 out of 5 rating. Its eerie.
