Several years back, I read the ‘Uglies’ series as well as ‘Peeps’ by sci-fi writer Scott Westerfeld. I noticed that he made it pretty obvious that his protagonists (Tally and Cal) were atheists, which I had no problem with, and finished the books, but looking back at the books a few years later, I noticed how the religious were portrayed kind of negatively in his books. For example, the natives that Tally meets in ‘Pretties’ were devout folk religion followers, but were portrayed as primitive, violent and stupid, whereas Tally was portrayed as intelligent, creative and brave. People who don’t believe in evolution were also kind of insulted in ‘Peeps’ (I distinctly remember the note at the end of the book saying something like “We share over 98% of our DNA with chimps. We all evolved from the same thing. Don’t believe me? Dude, look around you.”).

Has anyone else read these books? Did you pick up on these themes as well?
