Is this still useful for Catholics today? It was published in 1980 though. There’s a book sale at the moment and I’m wondering whether I should buy it

Yes, it’s still useful. I use it all the time. You can check it out online here to see if you like it.

Sure, it’s fine. Father Heilman posts excerpts from it sometimes and I have found it very useful in filling in the gaps of stuff I was not taught in Catholic school religion class when they were busy having us draw pictures or make collages of stuff that symbolized God’s love and other such hippie dribble.

Edited to add, Fr. Hardon is a Servant of God with an open canonization cause, so one day he may well be St. John Hardon and his works will likely continue to be read.

Thanks for replies, all 🙂

I’ve decided to get it. It’s the 2013 edition

When it comes to Fr. John Hardon, you can never go wrong. God rest his courageous soul. Back when we had little, we had Fr. Hardon.

Thanks for posting the link!
From the opening page:

“O my Jesus, wholly and entirely present in the most Blessed Sacrament of the altar, open our hearts, and those of people throughout the world, to accept and receive Your Grace,Your Mercy, and Your Love. Merciful Jesus, I ask this of You in Your most Holy Name. Amen.”

Thanks thistle.

I’m aware there’s a free online edition for it, but I prefer looking at them in paperback form

That’s a shame, too bad it wasnt late 90’s instead.

The fact it was written prior to the 83 Code of Canon Law and the CCC means it could potentially be off in several areas.

Though it’s good it’s post VII. I tend to dislike the old Catholic encyclopedia because of how outdated some of the stuff in it is. Though when it touches on perennial teaching, it is rock solid in its orthodoxy.
