Any methods that create a barrier to the opportunity for egg and sperm to unify naturally is considered grave matter by the Church.

Humanae Vitae, an encyclical letter from Pope Paul VI in 1968, notes the specific problems in any methods where surgery or drugs or barriers thwart the opportunity for human life. The encyclical, an official teaching of the Magisterium, the teaching body of the church, is fulled with sources both biblical and historically documented over the Church’s lifetime.

This Catholic Answers tract summarizes the official Church teaching in a digestible form.

Begin with these items, then perhaps participants in the thread can answer any further questions you have as to the “why.”
