I just ordered this based on recommendations and information that ICEL isn’t the best when it comes to faithful translations. Anybody have additional thoughts on this?

I have heard that the ICEL translation is not the best, plus it has extra prayers that are not in the original. I have a British edition which I purchased in the Vatican bookstore. They did not have the ICEL edition. It only has morning and evening prayer, though. What edition did you order?

I think you have the grail psalms (as how I think its called). I just ordered the three volumes available on Amazon.co.uk - 180 american bux - it better have everything – 🙂

I have the Morning and Evening Prayer with Night Prayer from the Divine Office. I have wanted to get the entire Divine Office as published by Collins in the UK, but I have not been able to buy it in the US. Thanks to your post I was able to go to the Amazon.co.uk site and find what I was looking for. They also sell the music. The hymns in Morning and Evening Prayer are wonderful. As a church musician I would like to see some of them introduced into the United States. Thanks again for your help.

Is there reason to believe this does not use translations from the ICEL?

Yes, you can be sure that the British editions of the Liturgy of the Hours are not ICEL translations. I found out about this particular edition of the LOH by checking out adoremus.org, the website for the Adoremus Bulletin of the Society for the Renewal of the Sacred Liturgy. When I obtained a copy of the book itself, it acknowledges permission to reproduce copywrite material from the Knox Bible, the New English Bible, The Revised Standard Version, and Today’s English Version. The Psalm texts come from the Grail, 1963 version. ICEL texts are given at the end of book as alternative texts. The doxology used is the common “Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.” The main problem is that while this edition can be used for private prayer, it is not approved for liturgical use in the United States.
