Sorry, Deacon, but that is not the case. I have the 1974 edition of the Sacramentary in front of me, and it says, “They strike their breast.”

I believe the confusion arises because the former translation (for which I freely admit that I hold considerable disdain) omitted the phrase “through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault” that has always been present in the Latin text of the Order of Mass, but still directed those present to strike their breast during the Confiteor. It appeared that this was to be done at the words “ I have sinned,” or at least that was generally the interpretation where it was done by priest and people—something I realize was often not the case. It never specified one strike or three, though one strike seemed the usual interpretation.

The current translation, by restoring the omitted phrase, brought with it the common habit of thrice striking one’s breast at each mea culpa, as was the custom in the Latin Mass. Since the rubrics still only indicate that one’s breast is to be struck, and do not indicate how many times, that appears to still be an open question.
