A co-worker of mine said that Protestantism is justified as Christianity because times are changing. We are “progressing into the time of Revelation” and as we progress so does the truth. “Christianity is a religion of progression.” I couldn’t find much to say in response. He also stated that just Jesus Christ came to fulfill Judaism and since the Jews were so corrupt, Christianity began. Christianity is an extension and continuation of Judaism the way Protestantism is to Catholicism.

What can I say to these claims and can anyone show me good information to better understand what he’s talking about?

There is no really simple way to answer this. There are similar threads on the developement of Doctrine you might check out.

However,

Catholicism is the fulfilment of Judaism.
Protestantism is the mutulization of Catholicsm and the Church Christ Founded, His Bride.

A side note, Dr. Regis Martin up at Franciscan Univ. calls it the Protestant Revolt, not reformation. when we call it the reformation we implicitly give it legitimacy.

The difficulty with the “times change” argument is that it runs very quickly into the fact that truth doesn’t. More often than not (though not perhaps in your friend’s case) the argument accompanies an attempt to vary some truth; eg, the truth that marriage is between one man and one woman for life.

It is the teaching of the Church that she has been given the Deposit of Faith to guard and to examine, but that she can neither add to it, nor take away from it. The “times change” argument is a denial of that teaching, which, if one wants to protest against the church, one inevitably ends up doing.

Blessings,

Gerry

GAK! What a load of nonsense… This is often the kind of poor logic that I encounter w/ Protestants, & frankly it makes me crazy.

All I can tell you is to share YOUR faith w/ him & let the Holy Spirit do the rest. His thinking brings him very close to the New Age Christianity.

What specific theological truths did change with the passage of time ?

If it is truth, then it will remain true regardless of the passage of time, like the existence of God, or the reality of the soul, or the immorality of abortion.

Such an idea, unfortunately, could be used to justify any form of change or revision under the sun, simply because the “spirit of the times” allegedly requires it. Time then becomes the master of truth, rather than the other way around.
