In the TLM do you kneel for the ashes?
Even before Vatican II we stood. We continue to stand.

That’s odd. We knelt prior to Vatican II, and our parish continues to kneel to receive the ashes.

I have never seen it or done it in all of my life. Surprise someone does kneel out there and I am glad to hear still kneeling. Are you Latin Rite?
I just realized that you are from Muncie my family lived there for about a year we attended St. Mary’s a beautiful parish. I don’t remember kneeling for ashes when I was in the parish though.

Pre-vatican II rubrics called for people to kneel at the altar rails to receive their ashes:

Postea veniunt illi, primo Clerus per ordinem, deinde populus: et genibus flexis ante Altare, singulatim recipiunt cineres a sacerdote.

(Then come the others, first the Clergy in order, then the people: and kneeling before the Altar receive the ashes severally from the Priest.)

:bigyikes: I am afraid mine are already dripping. I can never seriously remember kneeling to ever receive ashes.

Yep, I’m Latin Rite, and a member of St. Mary’s, too! Fr. Grady recently passed away, so I’m not sure what the new pastor will do this year.

In the past, we have always knelt to receive the ashes.

Kneeling at the altar rail to recieve ashes is merely a custom that can either be done or not be done.

It is the same as to when palms are distributed on Passion Sunday. One way is to kneel at the altar rail, take the palm from the priest and then kiss the priest’s hand. The other way is to simply pick up the palm branch when entering the church and then the priest blesses them according to the ritual.

By the way we at Mater Ecclesiae receive the ashes while kneeling at the altar rail, also the same with blessing of the throats, the palms used to be distributed at the altar rail, however due to the length of that Sunday’s Mass (over 3 hours) the shorter form is used.

My brain cells are dripping, BUT I distinctly remember kneeling to receive the ashes as a small child- but not during Mass, and the altar railing cloth was not used (good thing, with all that ash and little kids touching the foreheads they weren’t suppoed to touch).

I noticed last night while watching the Holy Father distribute ashes during Ash Wednesday services, he placed them on each head while the person was kneeling.
