To build a Church

What is the correct procedure to follow if I wanted to build a Catholic church in my neighborhood and pay for the costs

I think that you would want/need to speak to the local ordinary (bishop) that has jurisdiction for your area. Even your local pastor (leader of the current parish in which you reside) may have some ideas (if/what could be done, and if able, how to go about lawfully doing it)

I would check with them 1st.

You can build a church but in order to licitly have Mass celebrated there it has to be consecrated by the Ordinary of the diocese. They usually don’t accept private churches or chapels nowadays. You would have to call the diocese.

A parish? A private chapel? I believe the latter needs Papal permission.

Within the Church, I’d imagine that the first step would be speaking to the bishop.

On the secular side, you’d need zoning approval, building permits, etc. – not necessarily an easy task either, depending on the area. For example, a Catholic parish in Louisiana might be headed to an appellate court in its quest to build a new church:

You can build anything you want with the proper permits from the local authorities BUT the Diocese may not, (and probably wouldn’t) authorize it as a Catholic church. As others have said check with your Bishop. Don’t count on it because throughout the world churches are being shut down and sold off because they can’t afford to keep them up.

Income is down as is membership.

Not a problem. Let us know where ya’lls closed churches are and we’ll be along with some pickup trucks. We take all kinds. We aint picky. Fill em up right away, too.

Why do you want to build a church, exactly? I know in my area, if you went to the dioscese and offered them money to help repair and beautify the local churches, they’d jump at the chance.
