 I am a big fan of some older tv shows, like “Mary Tyler Moore” and “Rhoda”. The studios are taking their sweet time releasing certain seasons, and may choose to not release certain series altogether.

Yesterday, when I was searching for release dates of these various series/seasons, I came across several online stores where you can buy these complete series on dvd. How does this work? Are these copies legal? If not, how can these stores sell them so openly? Maybe they are legal transfers from VHS releases or something? Would it be sinful to purchase these, or no sin at all?! I am confused about what to do here, and would appreciate some knowledgeable advice.

A search of Amazon.com indicates that the first four seasons of Mary Tyler Moore are already available on DVD (individually or as a boxed set) and that the fifth season is pending release.

Aamzon is too big to be selling illegal copies, so I would say you are are safe with them.

It appears that Rhoda may still be pending release, though. How many seasons was it on?

Tammie,

I am also a big fan of the Mary Tyler Moore show. I have the first 4 seasons on DVD which I purchased through Amazon.com or Best Buy. The DVD’s you’ve heard that are available for the entire series are bootleg copies and are very poor quality. I asked that very question on a TV/DVD forum and was told to stay away from those sellers. Besides, I think it is illegal to buy from them. I’ve also heard that future releases of the Mary Tyler Show will probably not be released due to poor sales (a disappointment to me). Studios make the decision to release a season based on sales of the previous seasons.

The only advise I can give you is to write or e-mail the studio and ask them to release the remaining seasons. If enough people write, maybe they will cave in and release them. That is what I’m hoping for.

I always liked McGyver. There are a few episodes that portary Catholicism in a very positive light. One episode, a priest who is a friend of McGyver asks him to help find a statue of the Blessed Mother that was stolen from his parish. I also like the fact that McGyver did his best to avoid physical violence. 🙂
