I have recently encountered the Latin Mass and wish I would of grown up with it. I am 29 years old and only came upon the Latin mass when I was 24. I grew up in a lukewarm cafeteria catholic home and right now I live at home with my parents who are now lapsed catholics. There is a church that is about 30 minutes from where I live that celebrates the Latin Mass but it also celebrates the New Mass as well. I learned not too long ago that there is an SSPX chapel that is about the same distance. What do I do? Should I go to the SSPX chapel that only celebrates the Latin Mass or go to the diocesan church. I would greatly love getting to know people who are traditional minded, desire to live a traditional life and attend the Traditional Latin Mass. Thank you.

It is never a good thing to attend a SSPX Church on a regular basis. It opens one up to a schismatic mindset and fosters disobedience to the Church. In addition, confessions given at a SSPX Chapel are invalid.

My situation growing up was quite similar to yours. I go to the Latin mass every week but it’s at a diocesan church that also offeres the English mass, not an SSPX chapel which I would never go to. These guys claim to be Catholic yet have no problem publicly criticizing the Pope, something that their founder would never have done. They’re arrogant and on their current path are on the way towards schism. Anyways, stick with Rome and go to the diocesan parish! You may be lucky and also have a parish run by the FSSP (still diocesan) which only offers Latin masses. My church is also about as far away as yours but I enjoy the country drive.

If you chose the SSPX please know that you will not be attending a traditional church. The first principle of being traditional is not being in schism with the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church.

You can try searching for an FSSP parish or stay with the one you’re at. The new mass is a valid mass. Turning to a society that has broken off with the Church is not going to help your Catholic faith.

There is nothing traditional or Catholic about schism. Flee from grave sin, which is exactly what schism is.

I go to regular Masses, but I love to go to Latin Mass better,so my freind, go to the one that your Heart gives you joy of taken part in.May the Holy Spirit guide you always. Amen

Stick with the diocesan church and attend the Latin Mass there when you can. Remain faithful to the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic faith!

I’m not sure why you ask this question. Why do you not go to the Latin mass at the local church? I’m sure you will find traditional minded Catholics. Also I have found traditional Catholics at regular Novus Ordo masses. It’s not so cut and dry here.

There are certain lectures, events, gatherings that draw out traditionals more than others. Ask around. There are Latin Mass conferences that I’ve attended and met wonderful people…then I see the same folks again at a booksale or a spaghetti feed. Keep your eyes open. Ask around. Look around.

I have driven two hours to attend some special Latin masses for an ordination or something special. Go online and look around. I think you will find some nice people. What state and county do you live? If you don’t want to say, please PM me and I will try to help you find a good community if I can.

I’d recommend the diocesan TLM. Why ? The priest there deserves your support. If he’s willing to pray the TLM, support him by assisting his Mass.

God Bless

This. Where I live, we had a bi-monthly Missa Cantata in a beautiful church with a high altar, with reasonably high attendance, a few years ago. But some of the laity didn’t think that was enough, and (rightfully, sadly) felt that our Bishop tried to limit the celebration of the TLM. So they invited the SSPX.

Slowly, the “core” started to gravitate toward the SSPX Masses instead of the diocesan ones. The attendance to the regular TLM was eventually diminished. In the end, the diocese had the excuse they needed to reduce the diocesan TLM to a monthly event, celebrated at eight in the morning, in the side chapel of a postmodern architectural disaster. Needless to say, the attendance is meager, and the bishop has his “proof” that helping the TLM community only gives the SSPX a foothold and results in divisions etc etc. Sometimes the impatience of traditionalists is the TLM’s worst enemy.

So please, please support your diocesan priest who is courageous enough to celebrate the TLM, by assisting his Mass, and not the SSPX.

Stay away from the SSPX chapel. Go to the diocesan church instead.

You are blessed to have a parish that is close to you that offers the Latin Mass. That is the choice I would make. It is a beautiful Mass.

God Bless
