This afternoon I had sort of arguments with my dad.
He adviced me to get money from my bank in order to claim extra allowence. He told me every one in my situation would do the same, which is true but by law it is fraud and immoral. I got nervous when my mother asked how much money there was on my bank and lied about it. Was this a mortal sin?

Where I live, people with less than lets say 20.000 dollars on their bank receive every month extra allowence from the government, provided that they have a low income. However it is fraude to get money from your bank account in order to claim this allowence.

The best thing to do is be honest. I’m sure that they also ask for cash on hand, so if you take the money out of the bank and hide it in your home then you would be lying. This would be a mortal sin and most likely is welfare fraud.

Then you should not do as your father suggests, lying and committing fraud are sins.

Talk to your priest in confession for guidance.

If you are over 18, it is none of your parents’ business how much money is in your bank account. That is private.

What a crazy system.

I do not want to do what my father advices. That is actually why we had arguments. He thought I was a fool, too honest, too good for this world. I just feel sad that in an attempt to make my parents stop saying this, I lied to my mom when she asked how much money there is in my bank account.

What is stopping the government from asking the bank for your recent account activity? The withdrawal would be discovered and you would be in more trouble than just having your parents mad at you. You are doing the right thing by not taking out the money.
