To those who do things we regret

I’m a young buck. 23 years old. Any older wiser folks on here who have picked themselves up after a fall? What advice would you give?
 
Forgiving yourself can be the hardest part. When we go to confession, we know we’re forgiven, that’s pronounced at the end of it, it’s objective. Others forgive us and we can know this too. Accepting it is the hard part. Augustine wrote that forgiveness is when we no longer desire revenge on one who wronged us; I would say then that forgiving yourself is realizing that you are no longer due that revenge, even if you feel like it or even if it’s hard to see any other way. Pray for the grace to accept forgiveness and move on.

I am 63 and life can throw you a lot of curveballs.
We all have done things we regret. I have had to pick myself up more than once the last 40 years!! Sometimes I was knocked down by my own actions and sometimes I was knocked down by circumstances beyond my control. Life is a learning experience and none of us are perfect, but I believe there are those luckier than others.
 
First I’m assuming you made a good and complete confession. That is the very first step to forgiveness and healing.

I’ve been told that every time we remind ourselves of a past sin, it the devil trying to drag us back down. A prayer every time those nagging thoughts come back has helped me.

Also, it’s not only the young that make foolish mistakes. As a senior citizen, I can say with confidence, “There’s no fool like an old fool”. 😃

Hey man, the only thing you need to know is that you’re not alone. Not by half. And I mean we’ve all done bad stuff. Sometimes the bad stuff seems the most obvious thing that we’ve done so it sort of begins to eclipse who we really are. Sometimes we just need a bit of a nudge to see past that. I mean at 32 I’m still climbing that hill. I’m still digging my way out of what I’ve done. I wish you the best. I hope you get past this with no trouble. No lasting parts. Give yourself a break man. You’ll do better next time. No problem. I trust in you.
