To Vaccinate or Not

This is not specifically a question regarding the faith, but deals with pro-life and family issues.

My husband and I are new parents and are now faced with the decision of vaccinations for our child.

After some research, we have learned that some vaccinations are made by anti-life means!! (We found the information on cogforlife.com) This is horrible! We want to do the best for our child, but not at this cost!

We are now in a dilemma: Should we vaccinate ONLY using the ones where abortion is not involved OR not vaccinate entirely? We have heard a little about how vaccines can interrupt a natural immune system. Can anyone point us in the direction for alternatives for vaccines? We want to feel confident in our decision.
 
Yes it is a difficult question.

I have never heard that vaccinations that use aborted cells. I tried the link, but site that came up seemed a bit dubious.

A quick google search did produce a few articles about fetal tissues being used culture the vaccinations. This site list some alternatives available in the US.

As a father of four, I’m am surprised that this is more common knowledge. I’ll have to ask our pediatric doctor about it. Thanks for posting it.
 
Its a topic which has come up for discussion a few times here at CAF. The position of the Church is that alternative vaccines should be used, if possible, but if no alternative vaccines exist then it is morally permissible to use such vaccines.
Instruction Dignitas Personae on Certain Bioethical Questions:
Of course, within this general picture there exist differing degrees of responsibility. Grave reasons may be morally proportionate to justify the use of such “biological material”. Thus, for example, danger to the health of children could permit parents to use a vaccine which was developed using cell lines of illicit origin, while keeping in mind that everyone has the duty to make known their disagreement and to ask that their healthcare system make other types of vaccines available.

That document was drawn up by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and signed by Pope Benedict in September, 2008.

The questions are twofold.
  1. Is it morally acceptable to not vaccinate your child. You could be putting your child at risk.
  2. If you do not vaccinate your child, how much interaction with the general population do you allow, given that they could infect people too young to be vaccinated, etc.
 
Dear friend. This a medical question,and it is against medical rules to give answers or advices on open or closed forums. Therefor I advice You to call Your doctor or with good luck find a answer on the net,but look carefully where You ask. As a opinion I must say that vaccinating children is the best method to keep them healthy,that as a general observation. There are sad to say,some vaccines who are not as safe as we may think. The “pig-flu” vaccine do have a slim possibility to cause narcolepsy on children. But as I said,call Your doctor.
 
Unfortunately, doctors freely give advice that I am skeptical of–

I am not asking for medical advice, just if anyone can point me in the right direction for research so that we can ultimately make our decision. We would prefer not to use or support vaccines that are obtained at anti-life means, however we don’t want to put our child at risk. I appreciate the information and websites mentioned above. I guess I can bring this to our doctor and make our disagreements known.
 
The difficulty is that there is new questions that have arisen since the various theological works came out addressing this question (one can review such works in various places)

Due to new info.

There is a theory from a very credentialed research scientist that there could be a link between residual DNA from the aborted cell lines.

Such gives me pause.

I leave it up to you to verify if this guy knows what he’s talking about or not (;)), but it seemed like a fair description to me. It explained the background in a way that made sense of the whole issue for me.
 
I think one needs to draw a distinction between the use of fetal tissue in the production of a medical product versus the use of knowledge gained from research that may have had a questionable past. Knowledge is knowledge. And once knowledge is known, it need not be forever ignored just because evil means were used to acquire it initially. Of course we don’t want to do anything to encourage evil research, but if the use of that knowledge does not involve on-going evil, then the source of that knowledge cannot forever taint its use. Now I am not claiming that any evil research was used to create any vaccines, but I am merely pointing out this distinction as a general principle that should be kept in mind.

I recently worked with the Napro center for Ethics, part of the Pope Paul VI Center. They are experts in anything having to do with reproduction. I would also recommend the Pope John Paul 2 Center for Adult Stem Cell Research. Neither of these would seem to be obvious to your question, but both do know a lot about what is done with aborted fetus’.

As a parent of a 2.5 year old girl, our choice was to vaccinate.

To not vaccinate would be doing her a huge disservice in life in our opinion.
