He told me when you think something might be sinful, don’t do it. Wait until you visit your priest, bishop, or if you’re at the Vatican, cardinal and/or Pope to ask them whether something is sinful because they’ll know the actual answer. If you ask online, you’ll get different perspectives but opinion is not a fact if it’s wrong. He told me one mistake people with scruples make is they ask these questions to people online when they are not aware they’re giving strangers whom they don’t know too much power. I agree with him, pastors went through intensive trainings so they would give a more accurate answer. In other words, the only people authorized to answer whether something is or isn’t sinfully, or mortal/grave, are your pastor and bishop only.

This helped me so much, please share the scrupulous this link in case you come across a Is (this) a mortal sin? because people outside the church shouldn’t be allowed to answer for you. That’s like asking people online for a medical diagnosis when you should really see your doctor or for legal advice which you need to go to a lawyer. I used to ask if using cheat codes online was a sin and someone told me it is grave matter, but my pastor told me it’s not even a sin in of itself.

CAF has a regular policy of referring posters who appear to have scrupulosity, or post that they have it, to talk to their priest, and then those of us who are regulars don’t post in the thread and we also request that the moderator lock it.

Fr. Edward used to also constantly give that advice on here when he posted on the forums.

I’m glad you received this advice and hope you will take it to heart.

This is not medical advice. You should get advice yourself from a qualified physician who can refer you on to other experts if you have or suspect you have a psychological condition requiring attention.

Scrupulosity is recognised in medical literature as a manifestation of the psychological anxiety disorders Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder. Compulsions are not present in all cases.

Such psychological disorders are well researched and in most cases treatable, sometimes to the point of complete resolution. Treatment can involve talking therapy, drugs, or both. Problems once resolved can return; further consultation and treatment should follow.

I have seen on CAF that priests will typically also recommend medical attention in cases of suspected OCD or OCPD as well as providing answers to any religious questions people have.

What is scrupulosity exactly? Is it when you fear everything you’re doing is sinful?

Moderation has a protocol for that also as far as I know. A priest helped them set it up.

Additionally, your own post constitutes medical advice, which is not permitted.

May I ask, is scrupulosity the fear of committing a sin every day?

Ah, then I don’t have it. I guess I was misinformed about scrupulosity.

I told him I will go to confession and he told me that’s what I really need to do. He tells me I need to stop by and be forgiven, so the next time I see him is in the confessional box. I know I don’t have scrupulosity, I assume all of us will go to Heaven because going to Hell is merely your fault. Scripture says those who will be damned refused to go to Confession and be forgiven. Even if Hitler repented, he would’ve gone to Heaven so to anyone who is worried about being too late to seek forgiveness, I’m sure your sin was not as bad as his. God knows we’re not perfect, but he loves us even if we think he doesn’t.

I’m sorry you had to go through this. There are some people who tend to be quick to label someone as a … whatever based on very little knowledge of the person. At times when one gets labeled as scrupulous many of the others may follow along.

Do not be afraid to ask questions here and don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself.

There is no medical advice in my post other than to get medical advice if the circumstances warrant it. I begin by pointing out I am not giving medical advice.
