Today in paradise

i just got a question… i was thinking about the 2 thieves who were crucified with Jesus and Jesus told one of them that today you will be in paradise with me… but we believe that Jesus went down to Hell and then rose on the 3rd day so He was not in paradise on that day…

what did He then mean by that sentence???
 
One thought–there was no ‘punctuaton’ in the original Scripture copies. Therefore the sentence could have actually been “Yea, I tell you today, you shall be with me in paradise” instead of “Yea, I tell you, today you shall be with me in paradise.”

Another: paradise (heaven) is 'outside of time. The thief will die ‘today’, be judged ‘today’ and ‘today’ then becomes his ‘eternity’. Since he will be in paradise, he will be there ‘today’.
 
I think he meant that today, from your perspective, you will be with me in paradise.

Keep in mind, the Jews weren’t the most literal minded people, most semites aren’t… I’ve got a Jewish grandmother and I know all about it!

Plus, since it was written a long time ago, you have to understand the meaning of what they were really trying to say. For example, Jesus says of Judas it is better if he had not been born. To the modern reader, this might seem a strange thing to say, but in reality at the time to curse one’s own birth was a common way of saying one was in a very bad situation.
 
thinking about Jesus being in paradise…

we all believe that prophesy said that He would rise in 3 days…
