Did anyone see the today show this morning about the Judas Escariot gospel. They talked about how he was actually following Jesus’s orders rather than betraying Him. Why is T.V. so interested in trashing christianity as we know it lately? It is so stupid too. My question is, that even if these gospels were found and they are real, why would Jesus even need Judas to fill out His plan of being crucified if that was the case? He could have just turned Himself in. It doesn’t even make any sense. Also why would it state in the new testament that Jesus said that one of them would betray Him? So Jesus lied? I can’t even believe that the media spends any time on these ridiculous claims.

It’s another one of these announcements that makes everyone crazy for a while. Frankly–I don’t see the big deal either way. Jesus didn’t “need” Judas to effectuate salvation, but then again, God, had He so desired, could have redeemed mankind without the coming of Jesus in human form–so why didn’t He? We’ll never know while we’re stumbling around down here as mere mortals. If Jesus designated Judas as a catalyst or enlisted his help in completing his plan, instead of being betrayed by him, does it really change anything? Does it mislead anyone in a way that is threatening, undercuts the faith and/or is worth getting worked up over? Not in my mind.

Likewise this morning, the National Post, an erstwhile national paper up here in Canada, had a front page article (complete with old painting of Judas kissing Jesus) on the topic.

Here’s what strikes me about the whole thing. Catholics, and believing Christians in general, are hammered (from without and from within) by folks who insist that because the beliefs we profess are “old”, thay should be changed to get with the times. But when the bashers unearth a copy of an OLD document, it becomes a touchstone for the clamour to deconstruct Christian belief. So, old beliefs need changing, and old documents are, by virtue of their age, authoritative, all at the same time. Unless, it seems, those old documents support Christian teachings and beliefs. Double standard, anyone?

My question is, should someone unearth a manuscript of an old fairy tale that proclaims the moon to be made of green cheese, will that make the front pages of national papers, and be a topic for serious consideration on flagship media morning talk shows too? Or are we to conclude that we are actually dealing with enemies – yes, enemies – of the Christian faith, who will take any opportunity to attack it?

Blessings,

Gerry

This is exactly my frustration in a nutshell, Gerry. Furthermore, it’s not the point of what Judas’s motives were that would change anything, it’s the fact that they are trying to devalue the new testament by proving it to not necessarily be accurate. If this story isn’t accurate, what else about it could be wrong, and what else might we find out about the life of Jesus?

I guess it is intresting to try to help shape a little more of what was going on during that time, it could give us a bit more insight into early Christianity and heresey. But if its going to change Christianity, well there is a reason why it was not added to the Canon.

This Heresy was addressed about 180 AD by Irenaeus writing in Adversus Haereses:

They declare that Judas the traitor was thoroughly acquainted with these things, and that he alone, knowing the truth as no others did, accomplished the mystery of the betrayal; by him all things, both earthly and heavenly, were thus thrown into confusion. They produce a fictitious history of this kind, which they style the Gospel of Judas. (1.31.1)

I think that this will ultimately backfire on secular culture. I think that more Protestants will do historical research to be able to defend the bible. In doing so they will have to turn to history and the Catholic Church, where did the bible come from etc. As Cardinal Newman said, “To be deep in history is to cease to be Protestant.” (Possibly not exact words, I’m terrible with exact quotes, but you get the meaning). Such attacks on Christianity will only move us closer to unity.

In a way, the secular media, like Christian revisionists, are somehow in search of an “historical Jesus”. This leads revisionists to separate (in their schemes) Jesus of Nazareth from the so-called “Christ of faith.” By picking at history, each hopes to discredit the Chrsitain faith, and really, since we do not have anything like a comprehensive biography of Jesus at our disposal, they can have a field day. It’s still fallacious, though, since what we don’t know doesn’t in any way detract from what we do know through the New Testament.

And as C.S. Lewis pointed out, any “historical Jesus” constructed is simply current thought projected back to attempt to produce the kind of Jesus the projectors fancy. Right now, it seems they’d be very happy if they could paint him as an atheist.

Chesterton’s observation comes to mind: When a man stops believing in God, he does not begin to believe nothing. He begins to believe anything.

Satan is attacking us through the culture. The media is one of his best resources. It is Satan behind all of this!
