Hebrews 1:1-6:

Brothers and Sisters: In times past, God spoke in partial and various ways to our ancestors through the prophets; in these last days, he spoke to us through the Son, whom he made heir of all things and through whom he created the universe, who is the refulgence of his glory, the very imprint of his being, and who sustains all things by his mighty word. When he had accomplished purification from sins, he took his seat at the right hand of the Majesty on high, as far superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs. For to which of the angels did God ever say: You are my son; this day I have begotten you? Or again: I will be a father to him and he shall be a Son to me? And again, when he leads the first born into the world, he says: Let all the angels of God worship him.

***St. Mark 1:14-20: ***

After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God: “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the Gospel.” As he passed by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting their nets into the sea; they were fishermen. Jesus said to them, “come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Then they left their nets and followed him. He walked along a little farther and saw James, the son of Zebedee, an his brother John. They too were in a boat mending their nets. Then he called them. So they left their father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed him.

There’s some scripture in St. Luke that supports the idea in the
2nd reading that we are ALL called to leave everything and follow Jesus but i can’t remember it right now (St. Luke 10:17?).

God has spoken through the prophets (who were usually killed by those who didn’t want to hear their message) and now he speaks through Jesus…

Too bad nobody’s listening…

(OK… i know YOU are listening or you wouldn’t be reading this…)

:heaven: :harp:

Beautiful piece of scriptural passage. In the first reading the writer is affirming what happened in time past that God spoke to us through his prophets. It was not anymore subsequently when he sent his own Son. In other word, God himself came down, became man and spoke to us directly.

So what is that he speaks? The Mark Gospel tells that the good news is that the Messiah who comes breaks the power of sin and that he will personally establish his kingdom on earth.

Both readings bring great encouragement to me today, as like the people whom Jesus spoke to, I too am in need to hear this message. It’s important to know that most people whom Jesus in contact with were the poor, the oppressed and without hope. This news must be very refreshing for them. Today we can be oppressed, poor and without hope because of the hold that sins have on us. Similarly the good news of Jesus set us free from sins that would have defeated us in our lives.

I would therefore focus my eyes on Jesus, my savior and redeemer from my own hopelessness and poverty and look towards heaven, which is being promised by him. This needless to say is a life of repentence; a life of turning away from sins and wrongdoings. That should for me outshine everything else, my worries and my problem.

Amen.

so true… the greatest poverty of all is be separated from Jesus Crhist… the scary thing is that i have felt separated from Him even when i wasn’t in mortal or even a lot of venial sin… But then, maybe i was in serious sin, just didn’t see it as that… I was “distracted” by this or that person in my life, and didn’t realize that that relationship was distancing me from Jesus… didn’t know until i prayed the rosary for long period of time and/or spent time @ the Real Presence for LONG time… Sometimes it takes a lot for the Holy Spirit to be able to get through our thick heads…

But thank God for these Catholic things that bring us back to and unite us to Christ… when we are weak (& hardly even see that we need such a thing… )
