Todays standards would they be Priests?

by todays standards for formation towards the priest hood, the four pilliars of formation if anyone is familiar with it…

Would the original 12 be accepted to seminary formation, thusly faced with the same climax of seeing Christ die, running away, Thomas being in disbelief until he saw an touched Christ, if something in their lives in todays age were to shake them in the seminary formation process, and they ran away from the seminary, would they be allowed back in…

Would any seminary today take the 12 in their various ages, beliefs, education, etc…

Then more over

we are taught out of Faith, Hope, and Love, the greatest of these is Love. Yet the Church has come up with the Four Pilliars as a basis to judge an applicant towards seminary formation.

So thus is Love for Christ and the Priesthood enough alone to be considered and worthy of being a priest.

Would the players on 1960s football teams make the cut on today’s NFL teams, given today’s game and the physical characteristics of players who specialize for one position and for today’s tactics? Not likely. Would today’s specialized players make the cut on the teams of years gone by, with their “two-way” starters? Probably not. Does this mean that either groups of men were poor choices for the conditions of their day? Of course not!

The men in ministry today are appropriate for the conditions of today’s Church. The Apostles were the right men for the 1st century Church. Trying to make yesterday’s square pegs fit in today’s round holes - or today’s round pegs fit in yesterday’s square holes - is simply anachronistic and is a poorly thought-out construct… 😉
 
Last week my little girl needed stitches for the first time. She’s not quite talking yet. It was hard for me to be there. Very hard. The kind of hard I might well use a rare expletive were we speaking and not here on this forum. I almost went to get her a diaper from the car while it was happening (she was in need of one and we didn’t have any with us), but managed to gird my loins as it were before getting to the door and staying.

It’s not a good idea to judge how people act under fear until you yourself have experienced that same fear and even then it isn’t usually all that good.

thanks for the generic response there marty by that logic since no one is worthy of being a priest we should thusly have none and be sufficient with accepting that Christ is the perfect and last Priest that was ever needed.

Agreed but comparing sports to religion is like comparing the moon to food.

Agreed, so why couldn’t the fit in todays world ? In what way are people today in lesser need of the same standards of the 1st century, why is it the standards were good an acceptable then, but now are considered needing more, or need to be adjusted to conform to the lack of faith we have in society now . The standards have not changed, the teachings of Christ have not changed, the values that Christ has set, the standards He set that all are worthy of following him. If Christ had to pick his followers based on the standards we have now, history would be completely different.

So why is it we changed / modified what Christ has taught are standards that are universal.

Yesterdays pegs are fitting in todays round holes, because today we are taking those square pegs, and shaving and modeling them to fit into the round hole, instead of taking the square peg and placing it in the appropriate square hole .

there is nothing simple, or anachronistic or poorly thought out. 😉

Mek42 your story with your little girl is an interesting thought but your last part here is something i find more interesting and agree with…

I was not by any means judging the Apostles fear, we all face fear in different ways, the thing is if it is not a good idea for lay people to judge each others fears, why is it thus a good idea or acceptable for a panel based on clergy and lay people to factor in such fears a canidate may or may not have as a negative.

The questions I have posed are really not answerable i think, now that i reflect back on it, it is too much to consider and more than likely the truth would not be acceptable to anyone on any side of the issue.
 
My apologies then. The way your first post was worded it sounded like you were saying you didn’t think the early fathers would be found good enough for today’s Church. It was not clear to me whether your post was about the early fathers or about how priests are chosen today.

God demands love for Christ AND love of neighbor. Jesus knew the hearts of the 12 and knew they loved Him and would love His flock. The Church can’t see hearts and there is no “test” for love. The four pillars are the best way the Church has to acertain if the men who discern the priesthood will be able to love God and neighbor in thier priestly role.
