tolerance, how much?

Being intolerant can mean certain things:

1. Not giving into lies (being intolerant in the truth)
2. Not being respectful toward others (being intolerant to another’s beliefs or practices)
3. Not being easy to mold (stubborness)

We must intolerant in the truth, but tolerant and understanding toward others. It is one thing to speak the truth, it is another to call someone a fool, an idiot, a blind follower, a conspiracor, a liar, or a murderer. Calling names isn’t charitable. We must have charity in truth and truth in charity, just as we must pray with actions and do actions with prayer: the one goes with the other.

To call someone “a brainwashed fool” is a personal attack. An discussion shouldn’t become personal. One can say, “I disagree and think what you say is untrue.” And it isn’t necessary to say their religion is disrespectful to God. That’s an unnecessary inflamatory judgement. State your points, but don’t make personal judgements that offend.

Those personal attacks you mentioned don’t advance a person’s argument one iota. All they do is to alert the other person to the fact that they cannot respect one as a balanced intellectual partner in discussion. If someone does speak in those disrespectful ways, they are undermining their ability to witness the gospel to others, because they are witnessing lack of Jesus command, to “love your neighbour as yourself”, and even Jesus command to “love your enemies”.

The title of your thread is a key to this issue. Jesus never said anything as cold as “tolerate others” He said “Love others”

If someone said those things to you, and they could just as easily from their viewpoint, you wouldn’t like it either. So it’s back to Jesus’ command, to love others as we love ourselves.

In Islam, tolerance does not mean turn other cheek . It will encourage sinners to commit more sins & sins/ crimes will spread in the society .

If you are able to take revenge but forgive the sinner because s/he is repented , then you will be rewarded

I cant tolerate lies about Jesus.
And i know it says:

but it drives me wild when people lie and make up things about Jesus.

I have some agreements with everyone who posted. I don’t think it’s fruitful or charitable or called for to call someone brainwashed and that therefore they are incapable of thinking rationally. Id on’t think it’s a problem, however, to say that someone’s belief system is wrong because of x,y and z. I don’t buy into this notion that we aren’t allowed to have true, deep disagreement, that’s just lying to ourselves anyway.

It would help not to be emotionally attached or disturbed. After all it’s only a forum. This does not mean that we should devoid ourselves of any feeling. A post can be offensive and endearing when it becomes personal. We loathe the former and sometimes desire the latter.

I think a practical principle of engaging in a forum is to be as objective as possible. If you have some good ground / rationale to proceed with your argument it will speak for itself. No amount of sarcasm or promotion will minus or adds to it.

We have people who come here with obvious agenda like wanting to promote their religions. Such posters are those who persevere because they have clear objective in mind. If you come simply for the sake of discussion like most posters, like I said, steer clear of being personal. Then tolerance can be dealt with objectively.
