People.com is reporting that Tom has purchased a sonogram machine at home so he can check on the little one whenever he wants.

Does anyone else think this is totally absurd?

It seems that Tom fashions himself as not only a psychiatrist, but also an obstetrician or at the very least, an ultrasound specialist.

I’ve also read that sonograms are painful for the baby, that it sounds like a bus screeching in their ears and this is why some babies appear to try and hide from where the instrument is on the mommy’s belly…balling up on the other side of the womb or turning their face away, etc. How sad. TomKat’s baby must have to endure this on a regular basis!

I read about this also, and I found it to be very odd. I did not know that sonogram machines were painful for babies–hopefully they won’t use this machine too much. You would think that regular checkups with the doctor would be sufficient. Just my opinion, but Tom Cruise just keeps getting more and more bizarre.

The article I read said, “The 43-year-old actor said the couple will do their own sonograms, which show fetus development with ultrasound waves…” I took this to mean that he intends to do this instead of pre-natal care.

In other words, he intends to further isolate her and surround her only with people who will be supportive of his CoS beliefs concerning pregnancy and birth. Those include home birth, no meds of any kind, no physician, and not a sound from Mom at any point in time during labor, delivery, or 7 days after.

My guess is that she is showing signs of concern, so it is better to compromise some by losing the battle (such as by getting a sonogram machine for her so she can see how little peanut is doing any time she wishes–as if she would be able to read the sonogram, do the precise measurements, etc without training) in order to win the war.

He’s have done better to buy her a wedding ring and marry her!

Yes, I do think this is very absurd… In my profession as a Sonographer I can tell you that preforming even basic Ultrasound exams can be challenging in the hands of someone who has many years expierence and training.
Ultrasound has not been known to harm the fetus in the hands of an expert with knowledge and skill, none of which Tom or Katie have:( .

I’ve read that ultrasound is not something that is a good idea to repeatedly expose babies to for no good reason. It may have a negative effect on the deveoping cells of the babe. Like many technologies, it’s been overused. I only used fetal monitoring for a non-stress test with my last child when she was overdue.

Of course, your standard doc will tell you it’s harmless, but changes in fetal cells that lead to cancers 20 or 30 years down the road will be difficult to measure in double blind studies. I think it’s prudent to avoid repeated sonography without a good clinical reason.

Maybe he’s trying to find out who the father is?
