I saw this for the first time earlier and was kind of disappointed. Im not giving any spoilers, but I will say, Im still not sure why the writers felt they needed to included the character Russell Crowe plays in this movie? Since when did the 2 genres mix? Just seemed strange to me to have that as part of a mummy movie. Im also confused about the ending, but hard to ask questions without giving too much away.

I guess that I would be interested in seeing this when it comes out on DVD. 🙂

I had heard that there was going to be a new Mummy movie, but I don’t think that I was even aware that Tom Cruise was going to be in it?

Universal is “rebooting” the horror movie franchises it was famous for in the 30’s and 40’s (Frankenstein’s Monster, Dracula, the Mummy, and the like) as “Dark Universe”. The character played by Russell Crowe
[Dr Henry Jekyll]
is, perhaps, meant to tie the movies together, much like RDjr’s Tony Stark/Iron Man, Sam Jackson’s Nick Fury, or Stan Lee tie together the Marvel Avengers franchise.

Similarly, another studio is rebooting giant monster franchises (Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla, et cetera). And of course Warner Bros is working on the Justice League.

It is an interesting time for blockbuster movie franchises.

Save me an aisle seat. 🍿

PS.
I saw the movie in theatres and kind of liked it.

I do not, as a rule, follow movie reviews (why should I trust some stranger to dictate what I might like? 🤷‍♂️) but I had heard the movie was universally (heh) panned by the critics, so I went in not expecting much.

And Tom Cruise delivered.
🤕 🍿

If someone make a shared universe involving Father Brown, Holmes, Lupin, and Poirot, I may watch it.

The Kong/Godzilla monster universe (officially titled the MonsterVerse) is also Warner Bros.

I got a friend at work who’s a big movie buff. He told me about it when I got a Fanta with the “Mummy” on it. He personally didn’t like it and said that it’s part of a trend of remakes or something. I guess it’s similar to the abysmal radical feminist reimagining of Ghostbusters with sex switches on characters.

I remember one of the first movies to try this was ‘The league of Extraordinary Gentlemen’, I think it was late 90s, early 2000s, Sean Connery was in it as Alan quartermaine They had all these character of popular literature in a shared world, there was Capt nemo with his super advanced nautilus, they had Doreen Gray with his self portrait, the invisible man, Dr. Jekyll/ Hyde, Van Helsings wife as a vampire, and about 5-6 others I cannot recall right now.

It worked pretty good for that movie, but that was sort of a one off film, nothing else was done in this world.

I think they are trying this new stuff because they are just out of ideas when it comes to movies, so if they can re hash a bunch of old ones, bundle some together, create new worlds, etc, its all they are left with. I mean when it comes to movie genres, they have all pretty much been done to death, there is nothing really new to do anymore, I dread to think what it will be like in 20 yrs!

They can also be the fruit of characters falling out of copyright (or at least: into disputed copyright).

I seem to recall a handful of scifi/fantasy/steampunk works in my youth pairing Sherlock Holmes 🔎 and Count Dracula 🦇, for instance.

(PS. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was comic books/graphic novels before it was a movie)

I saw this movie when it came out. I thought it was entertaining but nothing special. Good enough for a rental but don’t expect much. The story seemed to wander a lot with out much happening. I didn’t like the ending, loose ends not tied up. It’s the new trend these days to plan a series of movies in advance. They are not self-contained anymore. Hollywood is just about business now. They focus on movies with the highest chance of making money. It isn’t much about art anymore.

Culture of Death. Too many death movies and seedy situations with scenes of decay, dreary skys, destruction and half nude girls with the strength of a weighlifter. Time for movies about life and living, and doing moral things.
