“… The one super-secret sentence that Scientology is built on is: ‘Do as thou wilt. That is the whole of the law.’ It also comes from the black magic, from Aleister Crowley. It means that you are a law unto yourself, that you are above the law, that you create your own law. You are above any other human considerations.”
To be fair to Crowley, and to understand both Crowley’s and Hubbard’s attractive power, one has to understand “Do what thou wilt” (which is also the basis of the Wiccan Rede) as Crowley understood it. The term itself may have come from the novelist Rabelais:
The original source … appears to be by a 16th century novelist, François Rabelais.
DO AS THOU WILT because men that are free, of gentle birth, well bred and at home in civilized company possess a natural instinct that inclines them to virtue and saves them from vice. This instinct they name their honor.” 8
In Crowleian terms, “do what thou wilt” means finding one’s true purpose, or “Will”, in life, and then fearlessly doing it, as explained:
Ellie Crystal writes: “Most Thelemites hold that every person possesses a True Will, a single overall motivation for their existence. The Law of Thelema mandates that each person follow their True Will to attain fulfillment in life and freedom from restriction of their nature. Because no two True Wills can be in real conflict …this Law also prohibits one from interfering with the True Will of any other person.11
“Do what thou wilt” is thus not interpreted in isolation, but in the context of human society. In fact, Crowley signed his letters with the phrase “Love is the law; love under will”, that helped balance the apparent selfishness of “do what thou wilt”.

I think Katie needs our prayers! So many Catholics are ending up in Scientology, and they need our prayers!!!

Please, if you have a moment, read this short article about Katie Holmes that is going to be in W magazine, and then tell me this poor girl hasn’t fallen into something really, really dangerous and evil:

Hello,

II have great respect for Catholicism, as a number of my friends are Catholic, including my babysitter, who attends Mass weekly - and also takes Scientology courses and receives Scientology counseling.

]
With all due respect, can you honestly say that once they get further into Scientology they will still be attending Mass weekly? I knew several Scientologists who used to be Catholic when I was dating my ex-boyfriend, who was a Scientologist. What I saw first hand is they eventually dropped Catholicism completely for the Scientology “road to total freedom”. (They all also ended up bankrupt with serious debts that they couldn’t repay.)

Scientology doesn’t reveal everything they believe to the new recruit. It is revealed slowly as they sign up for costly courses and auditing that they have to pay for. So, if someone is attending Mass and taking Scientology courses, this can’t logically be taken as an endoresement that Scientology is ok for the Catholic to dabble in. They may not know what they have gotten themselves into yet. As a Catholic, I can read the Bible and the Catechism and know everything the church teaches. But, is this true for the Scientologist? Or, do they have to pay as they go before they really know???

A Catholic might be alarmed to find out that Scientology teaches another view of salvation for mankind that is incompatible with Christianity.

My advice for a Catholic thinking of dabbling in Scientology, please look elsewhere for communication courses. Maybe try toastmaster’s to learn public speaking skills, or join a 12 step program such as Al-anon or AA if those groups are applicable to you. (Be aware that Narcanon is a Scientology organization.) If
you are lonely, stay after Mass and socialize, join a prayer group, volunteer with an animal rescue organization or visit elderly people in a nursing home. But, above all, know that God loves you and turn to him for help.

Thanks for the information. I do have a question that may be simplistic. Well, maybe a statement and I’m inquiring your opinion knowing I could be off here. 🙂
But being that Crowley was an infamous satanist, which to me implies motives that are centered on the selfish, it seems to me that his quote of “do WHAT thou wilt” may be a “perversion” of the more noble “do AS thou wilt”.
I mean, as you state, “do AS thou wilt” is taken from a passage that suggests nobility, good breeding that produces virtue. “Do WHAT thou wilt” to me doesn’t necessarily mean the same thing, and knowing Crowley’s “religious” background seems to put the quote into context for me.
