Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Tomorrow, May 1, we begin the month traditionally dedicated to Mary, and we also celebrate Mary’s Husband. The Feast of St. Joseph the Worker, on May 1, is one of two Feasts of St. Joseph on the Liturgical Calendar - the other being March 19, Feast of the Solemnity of St. Joseph. It seems very fitting to begin Mary’s month in this way.

My own devotion to St. Joseph began, as did my special devotion to Mary, as a teenager in the Legion of Mary. I’ve told this story before but bear with me please, as I relate it once more. The Dominican Sister who was the Spiritiual Director of our Legion in High School, told us on her way to our meeting she passed a statue of Mary near the door of the Convent and she said to Mary: “Mother, what shall I speak to the girls about this evening?” Sister told us, "Mary said: ‘Tell them about my husband’ ".

Of course we all understood that Sister did not hear any audible voice or have a vision of Mary but it was Sister’s way of sharing with us what God inspired in her mind and heart. Honestly I cannot remember what she said about St. Joseph that night but simply the thought of Joseph’s being Mary’s husband was something I had never heard, nor ever pondered, before that night. It was the beginning for me of seeing both Mary and Joseph in a new way – as a married couple. Now that I am married myself I can appreciate even more how much love there was in that humble home at Nazareth. I can better understand how not only Jesus in His Sacred Humanity grew in wisdom, age, and grace (Luke 2:52) but so did Mary and Joseph continue to grow spiritually in His presence.

Tomorrow is Sunday and the Sunday Liturgy will take precedence, but I hope many of the clergy who will be preaching tomorrow will include something about this unique and beautiful Holy Family.

Today, Saturday, I pray especially to Our Lady to help us all to be as she was, and is, the Icon of the Church. Like Mary we are called to bring Jesus into the world; while she brought Him physically, we are called to bring Him spiritually to others. By Baptism we share in His Divine Life and by Confirmation we have been especially sent to carry on, as Mary did, the Mission of Jesus to evangelize – to bring the good news of God’s Love to all.

Thank you for sharing that beautiful reflection. My parish will have the Crowning ceremony of the Blessed Virgin before Mass begins and Mary 's statue is moved to a more prominent place neared the Altar for the entire month of May. I did not realize the part about St. Joseph’s feast day, however so thanks for that information as well. I love our beautiful faith. There is always so much more to be learned as we continue on our faith journey:)

Dear Used2beSherryG,

Thanks for your reply. I haven’t heard anything yet about our Parish’s plans but I suspect something may be in our parish bulletin tomorrow. I’m sure our Catholic School will do something, but I’m not sure how much the parish will be involved in their crowning.

How wonderful that your parish will have Mary in a more prominent place to honor her in a special way. We have a very large statue in the Church which was crowned last year, but I like the idea of having something a bit different to draw attention to Mary. Especially in these days, when Mary is so neglected by many, sad to say.

St. Joseph has become more and more dear to me personally, as I have grown closer to Jesus, through Mary. I believe that is God’s Divine Providence at work in my life. As I drew closer to Jesus He showed me Mary and then Mary led me to a deeper knowledge and love of Jesus, the Trinity, and all the Holy Spirit continues to teach us as members of the Church.

Yes, eternity will be a continual growth in learning more as faith will give way to the Beatific Vision! For now, we see dimly as St. Paul wrote, but even as we see dimly there is so much beauty in all God provided for us in our Catholic Faith. 🙂

Enjoying your posts on Mary, very insightful. Thank you…

Dear Praise Christ,

Mary our Mother is such a gift to us from Jesus! Each time we obey His words from the Cross to John and to us: “Behold Your Mother”, the more we “see” by Faith! If we take her into our lives, as John and all the saints who followed Jesus, have done, we receive far more than we give!

Thanks for your reply and for your love of Jesus and our Mother Mary.
