No silliness intended…

A thing that really bugs me about other religions and small fry churches is that the vast majority of them have no head… no SOLIDITY … and that NONE of them have the fullness of what we have. Because of this, many of them, good as they are, can make their opinions what the believe… conveniently.

But we being Catholics must be very careful not to confuse our personal OPINIONS with our BELIEFS.

Our opinions… priests-earrings, girls-dress codes, boys-height of pants, women-working… and most of the things I’ve seen on this site… which, by all means are healthy to discuss! However… when we want the definition of a word… where do we go? The dictionary! When you want the Churches teaching on important issues: the Catechism! 😉

I’m thinking that we are FREE to think that the Churches teaching on contraception isn’t ideal… but our belief should be a mirror image of what it teaches! The minute we start picking and choosing what things we will accept and not accept, we are taking ourselves away from Catholicism, and closer to starting another religion;)

You’ll always get opinions that concur with your own, and opinions that shock you… Gavin52 said, “I am rather ashamed that there are Catholics on this board that believe it’s perfectly okay.” in regards to opposite sex friends in a marriage.

His is just an opinion. And his replies are just opinions. So I think rather than getting bothered by a Catholic who doesn’t share an opinion, I think we should get bothered by a 'c’atholic who doesn’t share a BELIEF. Yes? Amen!! 🙂

hah. I think I’m going to work on shortening my posts.

Thank you for a thoughtful post, Juliaaa. I just ranted on the priests-wearing-earrings thread, I am strongly opposed but that is merely my opinion, strong though it may be. My best friend is a female Evangelical, so I would disagree about how opposite-sex friends shouldn’t be allowed. But I love your emphasis that the beliefs are most important. All too often people say “the Church teaches” when truly they are saying, “It’s my strong opinion.”

There are PRIESTS who wear earings!!! :bigyikes:

What in the world for?

I teach 4th grade catechism, and I make it a point to tell the kids that sometimes I will tell them something that’s absolutely true because it comes from the Bible or the Catechism, etc, and sometimes I will tell them things that are just my opinion. I think that my opinions are true (of course!) but are not necessarily backed up by the Word of God. They are free to disagree with/disregard my opinions, but not the teachings of our Church.

Your post/topic is among the most wordy opinions I have seen to date. Congratulations! 😉
