We all know that any action we do repeatedly and can’t stop doing is addiction. Let me cite a few. Watch too much TV, drink too much coffee, eat too much chocolate, shop too much, sex addict, alcoholic, smoker, a girl who starve herself to make sexy, etc. etc.

How about good habits addiction such as working too hard a.k.a. workaholic, addicted in forums (e.g. CAF), etc.?

Does too much of something is bad?
Does too much love is bad?
Does too much good is bad?

That is called Balance. Balance yourself on both.

In a deeper sense you can look at the Seven deadly sins. The seven deadly sins are actually pure, natural human instinct and emotion. Each and every single human being. Whether they be a christian or not, commits at least one of the seven deadly sins each and every day because its a natural instinct in humans.

The ultimate goal is to balance and overcome this nature.

Balance myself on both?

If we speak about healthy lifestyle e.g. balance diet - contains nutrients, carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, fibers, mineral salts and water in correct proportions;
a balance of both good and bad bacteria and cholesterol;
or a work-life balance environment… well, I understand that.

But I am confused about the balance of a person who does both good things and bad things. Are you saying that a person need to do one evil act to maintain balance? Are you saying that no one can hurt anyone else if everyone is good? Or absence of evil would be a bad thing?

well, we are told you can never have to much faith, hope, and charity, or any of the other virtues, but the “amount” you have is measured in the interior, not the exterior, and even if we have very much love and kindness, that should still be expressed with discretion,

for example, when a doctor prescribes medicine, he has the ability to give you as much as he can, but he doesn’t, he only gives you as much as you need,
that’s the kind of discretion we need to use with our virtues,
we may have the ability to show more love, to be more charitable, but we should only do as much as is necessary,
you can never have to much love, because love doesn’t work that way,
when we grow in love, that doesn’t mean we are intensified in our feelings, it means *how *we love is more perfect,
because God is all love and the source of all love, to have more love can only mean to grow in perfection,
and the same is true for the other virtues, which all come from God, to grow in them is to grow in perfection,

there is also the virtue of temperance, which is what we use with everything so we don’t overdo or under-do it,

any amount of bad is bad, but no matter how much good you have, it’s always good, you can’t be to good of a person, because God is all good and we should reach for that, but you shouldn’t *overdo *it in your actions, that is all.

does that make sense?

Too much of anything, even love, can be bad.

For example, if I love a cat more than I love my children, that would be loving the cat too much. If I love my children more than I love God, that would be loving my children too much.

Even one evil act would be too much. You should never do evil to achieve a balance.
