Hi all,
I wonder if anyone has taken a medication contraindicated for pregnancy?
I took an antibiotic (docycycline, (sp??) which is not supposed to be taken while pregnant. When the doc asked me if I was pregnant, I told him it was very unlikely based on my NFP charting. Because I really had a bad infection by the time I saw the doc, I told him I was willing to risk it because I really thought there was no chance of pregnancy. Well, lo and behold, I’m on the 7th day of the antibiiotic and I find out I am pregnant, so I probably was from the moment I started the meds.
Does anyone have any experience with this particular antibiotic, or contraindicated drug usage?
Otherwise, please say a quick prayer that his/her guardian angels have protected my wee one from the drug!
Thanks,

Doxycyclene MAY affect tooth and bone development of a fetus. As early in the stage of pregnancy you look like you are, bone formation is not a major process, instead is it the development and differentiation of the digestive tract, and other major tissues, especially the neural tissue.

In all that i have read, all the info states CALL YOU DOCTOR. Dial 10 digits, and tell the nurse/receptionist what you said here, and i am 98% sure they will tell you to COME IN.

if you are traveling, call a DOCTOR, i.e. and MD, or even a PA or nurse practitioner.

Its just common sense if you are unsure, ask someone who has gone to medical school, and presumably knows what they are doing.

I’m not a doctor but before the moderators lock this thread (They recently started locking anything with a medical question), I’d like to congratulate you and let you know that I’ll be praying for you.

I also did an internet search for your situation and read what it said. According to what I read there should not be any high risk of problems for your baby. If you only just now found out that you are pregnant, I am guessing you are only 14 dpo anyway, or peak plus 14 depending on you NFP method, in which case your little one is not actually relying on you for nourishment. I would call your doctor anyway but try to relax and enjoy your pregnancy.

Check out Safefetus.com… it has information on medications during pregnancy…
In particular for the medication you have taken… try this link…
It is a high risk medication… so I would definitely call your doctor.

And what exactly do you think they are going to do for her? It’s not like they can pump her stomach or reverse history. What’s done is done, it’s hardly a 911 moment. Yes, see the doctor, but I can’t imagine they are going to tell her to race to their office this very second - unless they wish to council her to end the pregnancy, which I’m sure some offices may do at the drop of a hat.

Or am I just reading your post wrong?

I think letting her doctor know is a good thing, but I’m just curious about your level of urgency here.

Hi,

I think you will be okay; the main worry with doxycycline is that it affects skeletal development (in animal studies) and can cause dental discoloration.

As your unborn baby (being, at most, only 3 weeks old), won’t have any developing bones or teeth yet, it shouldn’t affect their development in any adverse way.

But just to check…you did stop the antibiotic straight away, right?!

Solicitation or offering of advice as to the diagnosis of disease, the effectiveness of medications, or the efficacy of various therapeutic interventions, modalities, and regimens is not permitted on the forums. While generally well-intentioned, it can have potentially serious reprecussions.

Whether the matter at issue involves recognized, experimental, or unproven therapeutic modalities, matters relative to diagnosis and treatment of both physical and emotional disorders are very individualized and cannot be safely generalized to a description on the internet of an individual’s symptoms, circumstances, or situation. Additionally, there is a clear-cut risk involved in accepting, relying, or acting on the expressed opinions of those who either lack relevant professional qualifications and credentials, or whose claims to such cannot be validated. Similarly, the experience or response of others in what appears to be a similar or identical set of circumstances is not an accurate measure of its applicability to someone else’s situation.

Effectively monitoring such threads is neither practical nor realistic. Tolerating them could cause a poster, relying on proferred advice, to take steps that might mitigate symptomatology, rather than seek out a diagnostician and validate the presence or absence of treatable pathology. That risk is both legally and morally unacceptable.

Persons in need of medical or psychiatric advice are advised to consult their primary care provider, or another reputable practitioner in the appropriate specialty, and work with them to establish a diagnosis and plan of treatment.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
