When Christ finally died (Mark 15:38) the temple curtain was torn in two. Does anyone know what this may have symbolized in Catholic Faith? An evangelical coworker says this is where the need for priests was stopped and “papists” have got it all wrong.
Thanks for any insight and I would love any references or web sights that may help.

** The torah rested in the tabernacle, protected by a curtain and only accessible on holy days by the temple rabbis. **The death of Christ opened the way into the Holiest Place making the temple, its priesthood, and its blood sacrifices defunct. The final sin offering had been made.

The new covenant replaced the old covenant.

At least that’s the way I see it.

You might be interested in Jeff and Tim’s Bible Series. The lectures, tapes and books cover this I believe. You might even see about having them come to your parish… 😉

Great Bible Adventure Series

Yes, when Christ died the sacrifical covenant was offically concluded and with Christ’s death the relationship was restored between God and Man. Jesus now made it possible to start His Church on earth. (Yet sadly, the temple continued on until 70AD)
“It is finished!”

Go with God!

****I might have added to “The final sin offering had been made.” ****That the finale passover sacrifice will forever be celebrated for all eternity.

Your co-worker is right that it indicates a change, but the change is (a) the ending of the distinction between the chosen people and all other nations, (b) that “the Jewish sanctuary and OT observance are abrogated”, and (c) the fulfillment of Mark 14:58 in which Our Lord mentions tearing down the temple and putting a new one up, not made with hands, in three days. Insights from Fuller, Johnston, and Kearns, A New Catholic Commentary on Holy Scripture, A.D. 1969, section 762o.

When I first saw this thread title I thought it was about the Hitchcock movie!

If I remember correctly, wasn’t there also some significance in the way the curtain was torn? I vaguely remember hearing a talk that mentioned it was torn from the top down which showed that it was God himself who did it instead of man who would have done it from the bottom up? Of course, I’m not sure that’s specific to Catholic teachings.

The tabernacle was reserved for the select few. It is now available to all christians. Jesus is the tabernacle. He is now looking for a place to dwell, and that is in you and me. 👍 God Bless
