Okay, so I made a post back in January about undergoing St. Louis de Montfort’s Total Consecration to Mary—got plenty of replies and good advice, but really didn’t resonate with anything in my spirit. I guess RCIA really was more spiritually exhausting than what I’d thought before.

Anyway, now that I’m a bona fide Catholic, I’ve been drifting heavily toward Marian texts, devotions (especially devotion to the Immaculate Conception and the Immaculate Heart), and study. I’ve read ‘Total Consecration’ in its entirety (and I’ll probably reread it sometime soon, because it’s truly too deep to ponder everything the first read-through), and I want to undergo the Total Consecration.

I’ve got three questions though:

I. For those who undertook this monumental step of devotion to Our Lady, how did the 33 days go for you—spiritually, relationally, physically, professionally? Were there any significant changes in the spiritual world surrounding you, like increased attacks of the devil or an abundance of graces?

II. I’m having a bit of trouble pinning down a date. The nearest Marian feast I could consecrate myself to Our Lady is on Her Nativity, September 8th, with a start date of August 6th (the Feast of the Transfiguration). August 6th is very important to me—that’s the first time I attended a Catholic Mass, and I’ve received some interior locutions related to my conversion while meditating on the fourth Luminous mystery of the Rosary—yet I also deeply revere the Immaculate Conception, which just seems like a “better” time, spiritually at least, for me to take this on.

III. For all those who’ve consecrated themselves to Mary, what’s it like afterward? Are things easier, harder? The same? Are the promises of a closer relationship with Jesus through Mary true? (Not that I doubt, but I want to hear your stories of how this devotion really changed and moved you).

If you’ve read this Epistle-long post, thank you, and may God bless you and keep you.

I actually did the 9 day Maximilian Kolbe consecration to start. I’m a big fan of St. Maximilian Kolbe and 9 days was a bit more efficient 🙂 I did renew my consecration with a 33-day, as you’re supposed to renew it every year. I already had a close relationship with Mary going back to my childhood, so this was just a matter of trusting her more and learning a little bit more about her. The biggest hurdle for me was giving her all the merits and indulgences I earn instead of distributing them myself, but since I understand she honors all requests (like if I say please give this indulgence to Mr. Smith who just died, then if he can use the indulgence, she will) I am wondering what I was so hesitant about because it’s really no problem.

Fortunately there is a Marian feast every day of the year somewhere and they’re all good. I understand wanting to choose a special date for your first consecration. One thing to keep in mind is that Immaculate Conception feast day falls around holiday time and it can be harder to keep up a prayer program for 33 days with all kinds of stuff going on. You can also pick whatever date you don’t pick this year when you renew next year since you’re supposed to repeat this exercise annually.
III. For all those who’ve consecrated themselves to Mary, what’s it like afterward? =
